I watched this series before reading a single review on it. The first thing I plan of when I saw it was, “this is like a better consuming version of Voltron!” Determined enough, I behold many references to Voltron Voltron – Defender of the Universe – Collection One: Blue Lion and also Neon Genesis Evangelion Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Collection.

In fairness, younger generations of mech anime fans will likely not be familiar with Voltron, but they probably will be familiar with Evangelion. And let’s face it, it’s younger generations who are normally drawn to these types of Anime.

The Bad

Yes it’s fair, this narrative isn’t terribly novel. Yet let’s be stunning here, the theme of post-apocalyptic survival is very well-liked. Some immense anime was created based on a popular formula. Did people not gape Independence Day simply because the War of The Wolds already covered the theme of aliens attacking the planet earth? No, they were two separate works that dealt with a well-liked theme for two different generations and in two different ways. I judge the same can be said about Aquarion versus Evangelion and Voltron.

While this isn’t mammoth, I can gape past the predictable yarn lines and indulge in this as entertainment alone.

The merging sequences have some very campy erotic overtones. Since brother and sister are often in the merged groupings, this was perhaps not well belief out. Not to mention, it takes 3 people to manufacture a merge, another unintended message?

Will the human hurry survive? I’m definite if we want the respond to that we will have to assume all the parts to this series.

The Good

Visually the animation was really elegant to me. I couldn’t serve but wonder how distinguished better Voltron might have been if the CG and animation effects available today were traditional in its creation. In fact, the images of the mechanical flying machines fighting and merging during fight sequences come 3D and HD clarity. While I was less blown away by the genuine human characters, overall the animation and effects are top notch.

The other thing I really liked about this place was the volume of episodes included in this modestly priced location. Too often these anime series are priced similarly for 4-6 episodes. Here you catch 13. I don’t know why but these seemed to rush longer than the listed 26 minutes to me. So in that sense this was a very helpful value. And let’s face it, in general existing fans are going to be the ones buying these sets.

The included box that holds the first three volumes in this station is nicely captivating too. But as usual, I was slightly envious to search for the art on the Japanese versions was more racy. The front image on this box impartial doesn’t do the artwork justice.

Conversely, the included pencil mat has awesome art that probably would have made a nicer cloak. This is a wintry extra that you rarely win with Anime series.

Conclusion

If you like anime and cartoons like Voltron and Transformers, this is a nice series that is appealing and well place together. If you’re looking for more faded, refined and fresh anime, there are many other options for you besides this.

Enjoy!!!

Created by Shoji Kawamori who was unhurried such classic anime series as Macross, Escaflowne, “Aquarion” has a provocative premise and is moving but borrows signficantly from other Anime shows including Kawamori’s beget previous creations.

When the Huge Catastrophoe treatens to engulf the remains of Earth’s population a run called the Shadow Angels awaken and retract off the remains of humanity. Our only defense are a group of humans who wing mecha (Vectors) called the Elementals. The discovery of Apollo a young man living in isolation who manages to consume one of the Vectors when a pilot is injured to fight off the cross human hungry Shadow Angels gives hope to the Elementals. They possess he might be savior they’ve been foretold about a reincarnation of the Solar Soar who will encourage bring their struggle to an raze and victory.

The series lacks the spark, depth and creativity of Kawamori other series and while the note is nice to peruse at with often visual splendid designs, the stories and characterizations are often lacking in depth and detail. The main characters are lovely shallow without noteworthy development which I found a bit disappointing as well. The first two discs were more a chore to sit through than a join while the third disc hinted at some potential by develing into what happened 12,000 years ago that forced the Shadow Angels into hibernation.

What saves “Aquarion” from the junk heap of derivative Anime is the beautifully rendered backgrounds and character designs. By the third disc of this series (it runs 26 episodes and half of those episodes are available on this the first spot of the reveal) “Aquarion” perks up and Animae fans may score honest enough meat to preserve them keen in gobbling up this series.

The explain itself looks helpful with shining, plucky colors that postiviely pop. Audio is extremely active as well with a nice employ of the surround speakers particularly during action scenes. Presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio it looks quite nice on widescreen TV sets without the murky bars being too big if you want to examine it on a standard situation that has a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. I should heed that the first residence I was sent wouldn’t play in any of my players. The shows would originate but the images would posthaste dissolve into pixels going through fits and starts throughout the episode and randomly skipping around. Luckily, I was able to gain a alternate first disc that didn’t have constant pixelation and quandary up my DVD player.

The extras are all located on the third disc of the location. We pick up a brief interview (about 5 minutes) with creator Kawamori, a 20 puny Q&A session from the Toyko Anime Aesthetic where Kawamori and the exclaim talent discuss the series and four short featurettes that focus on the themes of the series. Finally FUNmation includes a wintry looking pencil board within the case that your kids will be pleased almost as mighty as the series itself (when you aren’t explaining it to them) .

Overall, “Aquarion” was initially disappointing to me. While the premise was solid it wasn’t as well developed as I had hoped relying on cliches of the genre and elements of other Kawamori created series to carry the first two discs. By the third disc, however, things perked up because we got to interrogate the past of the world we were thrown into in the very first episode. Personally, I’d like to contemplate this developed further but I am unsure of how far this has been taken because I haven’t seen the last 13 episodes of the first season.

My fiance and I both loved this movie when it was released and we mild do. When we heard it was coming out on Blu Ray and on top of that 3-D we were beyond inflamed. Well that excitment was crushed when we got home, assign it on and were almost given instant headaches from the former school red and blue 3-d glasses and the fact that no matter how hard we tried to glimpse it, it unprejudiced was nowhere come 3-d quality. We sat there contemplating whether or not it was unprejudiced us or if the 3-d aspect of it sucked that dreadful and we came to the conclusion that it was definately the latter. So after a half hour of trying hard to like it we switched it to 2-d (thank god for blu ray for having that option) and saw how in 1080p it was almost 3-d itself.

Needless to say the very next day I went support to the store I purchased it from and changed it for the regular blu ray version (which was $5 cheaper than the 3-d version and totally worth the lift, 5 stars for that version.) It was very dismal that it did not work out because such an fantastic holiday movie with such grand animation would be a no brainer to have as 3-d but unfortunately it fair is not worth the headache and strain.

I went to view this movie tonight with a mentally handicapped friend – “Michael” — (from a L’Arche home here in Winnipeg, Canada) . We were the first persons in the theatre for the very first evening showing in this city – and we were the last to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves – enchanted by the movie’s subtleties and happily exhausted by its roller-coaster rides.

Time and again, Michael (who is sensitive, compassionate and with a top-notch sense of humor) turned to me in the darkness, smiling in appreciation at the precise same moments I turned to ogle his reactions. Each time this happened, it was at a moment in the film when some limited detail, perfectly captured through worthy ‘cinematography,’ brought moisture to my normally cynical spy, and a warm smile to Michael’s innocent face.

Some examples: There is a lone, shaded child on this apparent ‘dream train’ to the North Pole – a girl of about ten or eleven years, and like a painting reach to life, the miraculous technology at work in this film captures the particular sensibilities of this compassionate, dim youngster — We eye shrimp mannerisms of someone comfortable with herself in a design the other (ten or so) white kids on the snort are not. And the do is profound — the movie audience, including some children of that same age group, went tranquil at such moments in the film.

My friend Michael – who has a ‘savant’ genius for perceiving my emotions, and expressing them for me out loud in public — Michael turned to me with a elated smile when the girl on the speak reaches out to maintain the hands of the poorest boy, sitting alone in the rear compartment; and later, she hugs two other boys, (one of them the central character) — at their final parting. At that moment I held up a finger to my lips to try to hush Michael, but couldn’t prevent him from saying aloud: “She’s such a sweetheart.” There were murmurs of appreciation in the darkness around us, responding to this innocent sentiment.

There is a sublime moment, on the relieve platform of the lively verbalize — the Northern Lights glimmering in the distance — when the young girl joins in song with the poorest kid on the boom (a younger boy from a old-fashioned home on the “far side of the tracks”) . I admit to being overcome with emotion during this duet (a fine, strong melody with poignant lyrics) – and I blurted out loud to Michael, after the first chorus: “What a extraordinary song!” The refrain includes the words “When Christmas comes to town.” [It's a song so profitable that, with some future 'cover versions' by serious musicians who could do it justice --- this "Christmas Comes to Town" song could, I fill, deservedly join the runt list of proper, Christmas 'classics.']

I’d have to agree with anyone who thinks this movie is a microscopic short on residence. And yet . . . once you’ve suspended disbelief — beginning with an earth-shattering, Christmas-eve arrival of a steam-puffing, passenger mumble on a small-town Michigan street, directly outside the home of the movie’s central character — once we’ve swallowed that premise, the movie disarmingly embraces the child in us, (including our fears) and our reservations vanish without our noticing.

Just as mountainous `realistic’ painters, (assume Rembrandt or Vermeer) worked wonders of light & shadow that no mere photograph could ever recall, so too this computer-animated marvel takes your breath away through an accumulation of diminutive but acute observations that could never be captured by old cinematography. Prime examples from the opening scenes:

A shaft of light illuminates the boy’s bedroom, and he is reflected in a chrome, automobile hubcap leaning against a wall; at once we portion his understanding — through the keyhole of his bedroom door – we can peer only the backs and the dressing gowns of mother and father, as they say goodnight to the boy’s young sister, after determining the set of her concept in Santa’s existence – a plan no longer shared by the older brother, whose recognize is at the keyhole.

Later, on the vow, there’s an beautiful finish up of the boy’s face, a runt blemish above the pores on his upper legal cheek; the `camera’ pans in rotation, capturing perfectly, the texture of the boy’s hair, and that of the young shadowy girl sitting beside him — subtleties of such perfection one wonders if the fresh, artistic accomplishment of “Polar Reveal” could ever be surpassed.

The film’s last scene, consists entirely of a close-up belief of a cramped, silver bell (of the type associated with sleigh rides) with its attached ‘ribbon’ of red leather. The cramped bell helps compose the final point about `Belief’ — in things unseen, (or forgotten, and thus inaccessible to some adults) . So simple, so remarkable, so enlightening an image. My friend Michael turned to me at that moment, with a sparkling smile. And we objective shook our heads in horror.

—-

Yes, this movie must have SOME shortcomings – one or two moments that don’t quite work as intended by the creators. But honest now, in the afterglow, I can’t rob what they were. The film was fair too satisfying an experience!

I’m a 57-year-old grandfather who happens to occupy that “The Polar Affirm” is the first, fair Christmas classic in almost 60 years. Not since the modern Kris Kringle “Miracle” movie of 1947, has any film (to my jaded watch) so transcended our secular, commercial views of the Holiday Season, with such uplifting and original reminders of the timeless and right spirit of Christmas.

Season 1 – Volume 1: He-man & the Masters of the Universe! The classic 80s cartoon FINALLY arrives with all its memorable characters, stories & fantasy, digitally remastered with extras! This descend – trace the date! October 18th! Piece 1 of 2, Season 1, this place is chock-a-block with unbelievable extras. The hit cartoon adventure series brought to life the adventures of Prince Adam & his alter-ego, the distinguished He-Man battling the nefarious Skeletor to protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Son of King Randor and Queen Marlena of Eternia, his faithful sidekick was the cowardly green & orange pet tiger, Cringer. “By the power of Grayskull!” Adam’s scream in times of misfortune, together with his magical ‘Sword Of Power’ transformed them into the great He-Man and the ferocious tiger, Battle Cat. Aided by Man-At-Arms, Duncan (the slightly older scientist and Adam’s mentor), his adopted daughter Teela (Captain of the Guards and Prince Adam’s aide), the quirky & amusing Orko (the shrimp floating magician) & Ram Man (kind hearted, but humdrum “human battering ram”) with his winged ally Stratos, the team faced the forces of bad. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull entrusted Prince Adam with the Sword of Power to defend the elegant kingdom of Eternia and Grayskull – said to occupy the powers to rule the entire universe.

Heading the forces of darkness was Skeletor, the sinister hooded skull face, residing on the murky side of the planet in his remarkable fortress, Snake Mountain. While the savage, dim-witted Beast Man, who possessed telepathic control over many animals was his legal hand; it was Evil-Lyn, the incredibly shrewd witch who played on Skeletor’s troop for sheer convenience, only to lift power for herself at the moral moment. The cyborg-like Trap Jaw, aquatic warlord Mer-Man, and the three-eyed, pan-visioned Tri-Klops completed Skeletors army.

The demonstrate ran for two seasons, of 65 episodes each – hence the DVD release of each season has been split into 2 Volumes each, over the next 2 years. Initially, many of the stories build our heroes against Skeletor, revolving around Castle Grayskull. As the series grew the adventures took them to many different locations and foes, often putting characters on both sides of the battle. Sometimes criticized for being too shaded & violent for its time, this claim seems a diminutive redundant in today’s age of children’s graphic animation. Particularly note-worthy is that each episode ended with one or two of the characters presenting a honest from that episode’s anecdote – the consequences of thoughts & actions, which makes the series particularly relevant given the times we live in. For fans of the demonstrate – its a immense chance to relive those golden moments of childhood, & hopefully it will start the door to a whole unique generation of fans, adults & kids. Come By ready to feel the power of Grayskull!

Why this ghastly statement??? Originally cartoons were shown on Saturday morning only. He-Man was the first point to to be syndicated through a network other than the titanic 3 (ABC, NBC and CBS) . What this meant was that an episode was shown every afternoon instead of unprejudiced on Saturday mornings. Wow… 65 episodes were made per year instead of only 13 that were normally produced for a typical Saturday point to and this made for an improbable following. Who didn’t peruse this indicate? Even parents would comment about it when they asked what I did for a living and I mentioned I was an animator on He-Man. This was one of the last shows done entirely in the U.S. as most of the animation work was being sent overseas by the early 80′s. Lou Scheimer was the founder of Filmation Studios and made a announce to preserve the work in the U.S. and was just to his word until it became impossible to compete with the wages being paid overseas and, sadly, the studio closed in ’86 but not until after the successful runs of He-Man, She-Ra, Ghostbusters and the final series Bravestar. My memories working at Filmation are some of the best I have of my 25+ years in the animation industry. He-Man changed the diagram cartoons would be viewed forever… this is a must have situation!!!! Lets hope they settle to release some of the other memorable piquant shows created at Filmation Studios.
