I treasure Howard Hawks’ films…Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, and Rio Bravo are extraordinary pieces of entertainment. As I was watching Australia, the unusual Baz Luhrmann movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I kept thinking…man, Baz must really adore Hawks’ movies, too.

As evidenced by the films above, the mismatched couple who fight and fight until they realize they’re perfect for each other (examine Powerful Ado About Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, and Moonlighting as other examples of the fabricate) and the group of underestimated misfits who approach together to fight depraved are two gigantic elements faded again and again by Hawks. Throw in a bit of John Ford’s The Searchers and its hard discover at racism leading to inhuman deeds and mix well and you have…Australia.
The scrape novel audiences may have with Luhrmann’s fresh movie is it’s very, very earnest. This is straight ahead story storytelling with its heart on its sleeve and hat and boots with never a wink to the crowd in the theater to say “ain’t these people quaint”. You either capture in or you don’t. If you do, like I did, you’re in for a hell of a traipse.

This, I feel, is the flip-side to The Dim Knight. First-rate and contemptible are trapped in something akin to a battle and an embrace in Nolan’s Gotham City. You root for Batman, but he does stuff that is on the improper side of freedom and civil rights. The Joker is pure crazy, but he’s the most mesmerizing character in the film. In Australia, there are qualified guys and abominable guys and you are either really top-notch or twirl your mustache imperfect. The main villain actually may be a bit too two-dimensional in that aspect, but it didn’t injure my overall enjoyment.
Why? Well, memoir melodrama is hard to pull off…I’m talking about the proper stuff here. The novel BBC production of Bleak House is a spacious example. There are very superb and very, very awful people in that memoir, but the acting is so fabulous you rarely if ever fetch yourself rolling your eyes (like whenever I’ve watched Smallville…see: poor story melodrama) . Kidman and Jackman sell their characters…the displaced Englishwoman and the rough-hewn “Drover”. They are thrown together honest to, initially it seems, thwart a inferior cattle baron from monopolizing the beef industry in the country. But the other colossal yarn, the main one in fact, centers around Australia’s “lost generation”. These were Aboriginal children who were fathered by white men who didn’t claim them. They were taken by the government, the mothers had no rights, and handed over to the church to be taught to “act white” and then work in the servant class. Nullah, played by the astounding child actor Brandon Walters, is one of these “creamies” who has been hidden on the ranch now owned by Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) . Lady Ashley discovers what is going on, is disturbed by the law, and works to retain him hidden as well. Why the Drover cares so distinguished about Nullah becomes positive later in the film (no, it’s not what you mediate…that would be too easy) and Jackman’s experience with stage and musical work does him proud here. He can do earnest better than almost any actor alive when he needs to and his later utilize of the f-word (the only curse I can remember from the entire film) hits so hard, in objective the correct emotional moment, that it kills. Russell Crowe was originally cast as the Drover but backed out. If Crowe had done the film, and I have liked him in other things…the Napoleon-era British navy film that I can’t remember the name of fair now, it would not have worked. Crowe never loses that bit of edge and the Drover, at one point, really has to fully atomize down and become completely vulnerable. Jackman shines at that point.
Anyway…a warning, the movie is long 2 hours and 40something minutes, but I didn’t realize that until I had left the theater. I saw it alone…I was out of town at a pediatrics meeting…and that’s a salubrious thing. I didn’t have to cover from Holly the few times the movie hit me a bit too hard and do that cough-throat clearing thing we dudes do to mask up a stray sail.
I was looking forward to seeing this movie when it was release slow last year given all the hype, and was not dissappointed!
Director, Baz Luhman, has served up a slab of nostalgia ala Australian style with all those blooming elements we savor from films of the 40′s and 50′s, breathtaking, sweeping landscapes, ravishing costumes and two delicate actors in Kidman and Jackman who secure the essence of the film. It nostalgia in every sense of the word, in every frame. The acting style reminds us of Bogart, Grant, Bacall and Dunne. The myth is story in every scheme and unprejudiced delicate. I loved the salute to “The Wizard of Oz”a really nice touch!
Of course we all know how it’s going to extinguish. Watching Australia was like eating a box of Quality Street chocolates. Certain I know what I’m getting, but I unruffled cherish it.
For those of you who want to expend a few hours (and I mean a few; it’s almost 3 hours) being completely entertained then thisis the movie for you. I only wished they had inserted an interval on it’s theatrical release and made the whole event at the movies a right nostalgic experience.
I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t like this movie, unless you fair aren’t up for a feel edifying report. I want to examine more movies being made like this!!!! Well done to all!!!

There are plenty of reviews here that deal with the stutter and storyline of “Chopper”. But I want to discuss Bana’s wonderful physical transformation to play this fragment.
Not since Robert DeNiro’s chameleon-like transformation into Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull” has an actor so thoroughly entrenched himself in the physicality of a role. Bana made his early career as a stand-up amusing Down Under, but watch at what he has done here! Survey “Dismal Hawk Down” to win the “normal-looking” Bana, then inspect “Chopper”, his earlier film, to notice the lengths he went to to procure some 80 pounds of fat/thickness to play this hulk (no 2003 movie pun intended — okay, maybe it is intended) of a thug named Note Brandon “Chopper” Read, one of Australia’s most conspicuously (in) illustrious criminals.

At the originate of the movie, and early in the filming of the movie, Bana/Chopper is a physically imposing yet fit figure. As the years pack on the pounds, Bana gained the girth to mirror Chopper’s. A truly astonishing and doughty acting choice!
Now read other reviews if you want opinions on the film (I liked it, by the intention) . But somebody speak DeNiro that Bana is stop on his tail.
“Chopper” is one of the more bewitching films I have seen in the last year or two. An Australian narrate, the movie purports to swear the fable of one of that country’s most famous criminals. By doing this dastardly deed, Jimmy can pin the rap on Chopper and skate out from under a conspiracy charge. And he tries to do honest that in one of the film’s most chilling scenes. Jimmy stabs Chopper repeatedly to no avail. Instead of screaming, clutching his gut, or going after his friend Chopper merely looks at Jimmy with a pain expression on his face. The betrayal of a pal doing such a infamous bit of work hurts Read more than the knife wounds.

Or does it? We can never be absolutely definite what Chopper thinks because he’s an incurable psychopath. After taking the tumble for the prison killing, Read serves more time but eventually gets a coveted transfer to a less harsh facility when he has a fellow inmate hack his ears off. Exactly. He hacks his ears off. If that won’t glean you out of the coast, I don’t know what will. Anyway, Chopper eventually returns to his life on the streets. By this time, he has his teeth capped with metal and looks even more frightful. He promptly strikes up a relationship with Tanya (Kate Beahan), a harridan of some repute, and fair as promptly beats her and her mother senseless after she rebuffs him. He even pays a visit to his archaic pal Jimmy who, it should go without saying, is less than alive to about a reunion. Read doesn’t seem to do mighty except visit with his father, terrorize people, and leer for a diagram to attach some money in his pocket. He’s obviously not the type to work a normal job, not with his explosively violent temperament. Here’s a guy who goes to a dealer’s house, shoots the guy in the legs, and then drives him to a hospital. Not your average corporate type.
At the same time, Sign “Chopper” Read is a charming rogue, a plucky yet loveable goon covered in tattoos and scars sporting a smile distinct to acquire over the hardest hearts. You can’t assist but like the guy considering his sense of humor, his aw shucks attitude, and his peril for friends and foes alike. What other criminal would drive one of their victims to the hospital? Or advise such remorse over the distress he causes his girlfriend? What a guy! Isn’t Chopper a tall chap! Clear, he kills, robs, maims, and brutalizes people, but his winning personality makes everything acceptable in the raze. That would be the Quentin Tarentino win on Ticket Read. Fortunately, director Andrew Dominik doesn’t bewitch that residence. He does play up a sort of running dim humor about the proceedings, but we never arrive to feel anything but revulsion for this character. A wistful grin and a sudden remorse over a violent crime never fully absolve Read of our scorn. The final shot of the film, where we discover Chopper once again in a prison cell yakking it up with a few guards about his latest television interview, underscores our initial impressions of the tall fellah. He’s exactly where he needs to be no matter how charismatic and charming his personality. Thank goodness for prisons!
Eric Bana should have won some awards for his portrayal of this unpleasant goon. He disappears into the character, a fact confirmed after watching the brief interviews with the loyal Chopper included on the DVD. Also included in the extras are deleted scenes and an audio commentary with director Dominik and Chopper himself. A violent film not reliable for the squeamish or exiguous children, “Chopper” nonetheless is an engrossing distress that acknowledges the tendency of society to idolize criminals while ultimately consigning that foolish idea to the ash heap.

“So Proudly We Hail”, often comes in for more than it’s radiant fragment of criticism over it’s depiction of the qualified work carried out by nurses in the South Pacific during World War Two. Mention is made of the nurses looking like they have fair stepped out of the beauty parlour with makeup and hair all looking perfect. I’m always mystified by that reaction as I feel this production goes a long draw towards depicting the succor breaking and often extremely hazardous work that nurses carried out during the war in the Pacific. The film was made with the very best of intentions at a time when the outcome of the war was composed far from positive. Criticism has also been leveled at the propaganda inherent in parts of the script. Once again one has to plan this film in it’s time and situation and if it motivated people to feel patriotic about their country in time of war and at least partly informed the movie going public about some of the work of wartime nurses then that is a job well done in my thought.
“So Proudly We Hail”, traces the stories of 9 nurses from the time they leave San Francisco through the trials and tribulations of their service with the armed services in the South Pacific. Three in particular are focused on, team leader Lt. Janet Davidson (Claudette Colbert), vivacious Lt. Joan O’Doul (Paulette Goddard) and inwardly tormented Lt. Olivia D’Arcy ) Veronica Lake) . Their stories are interwoven through the valid life action of the group first being sent to Hawaii and then after a torpedo raid which sinks some of their companion vessels, being removed to the Bataan and Correigador regions where they care for and then attend evacuate the military and civilian wounded. The saga ends with the remains of their party being evacuated after worthy loss and suffering to Australia before embarking for home at the demolish of their tour of duty. The women experience all the deprivations of war and personal loss along the plan as Lt. Davidson falls in care for with Lt. John Summers (George Reeves) only to live in daily scare of him being killed while composed having a job to do as the team’s main source of strength. Lt. O’Doul (Paulette Goddard) experiences similiar feelings for “Kansas” (Sonny Tufts), the gangly soldier who wins her heart and in the most tragic spot Lt. D’Arcy who confronts customary demons and the loss of her fiance at the hands of the Japanese. Many hideous incidents darken the daily grind of the nurses work such as regular bombing of their medical camp by the enemy and having to experience all the distress and suffering of wartime casualties and death of loved ones. Each woman is touched in some plan by her involvement in the action and emerges the better for her experience. We watch the women work under not only unsafe conditions but in those that would test the sanity of the strongest person with daily shortages of supplies, shelter and food a constant feature in the daily work.
The film places large emphasis on the inner strength of the individual under fire whether it be soldier, nurse or wounded civilian. In this respect the film could never be judged superficial as many loyal life elements of this period are tied into the memoir. Much scenes abound in “So Proudly We Hail”, a standout is the scene during the evacuation of the camp when the nurses are stranded in one of the huts under fire and the true life treatment of war nurses in Nanking is mentioned as a telling reminder of the brutality of war. Lt. D’Arcy’s ultimate self sacrifice for the safe of the group tranquil is a scene that packs a precise punch with it’s graphic depiction of a suicide killing of enemy soldiers. All three lead actresses are standouts in their gain current design. Claudette Colbert delivers yet another mighty and totally convincing performance as the leader of the group. Long associated with extremely glamourous roles here she portrays a character forced under dreadful conditions to collected be strong for the sake of her nurses. Paulette Goddard in an Academy Award nominated performance is safe as the flighty mantrap with only men on her mind who develops into a responsible and dedicated nurse as her wartime experiences deepen her character. Veronica Lake also minus her o usual glamourous persona is effective in her role as the bitter nurse who is out to punish all Japanese because of the loss she has suffered. Despite the reported tension between Claudette Colbert and Paulette Goddard during filming none of that shows on veil as the main three actresses work very effectively together as the one team. One last standout in the cast is actress Mary Servoss who plays Capt. “Ma” McGregor the lead of the camp and in ultimate charge of all nursing staff. Her handsome scene where she faces the death of her wounded son is a stunner and the emotional highlight of the whole film.

Passed off as Hollywood’s removed conception of what war is like, “So Proudly We Hail”, offers mighty more than that and contrary to well-liked opinion in a number of scenes where appropriate, the women do present what the wear and ride of war work does to the individuals. I pick up the film a noteworthy depiction of war and the dread it causes. Mixed with horrific scenes such as Lt. D’Arcy’s suicide are curious ones like the simple Christmas celebration on the boat and the scenes showing operations being conducted factual in the middle of air raids. These can’t wait on to recede the viewer and instill even in the most hardened cynic a thought in the basic worthy of man. If they are bringing THE HIGH AND THE Noteworthy to DVD finally, then maybe it’s time to unravel the complications surrounding this film and feature it on DVD. If Tarantino had made Waste BILL in the 1940s Lake would have beat Uma Thurman in the role easily. She’s hotter than a pistol and she’s Ms. 45.

Paulette Goddard has, I assume, the most bright role and I agree with other reviewers who say this is Goddard’s best allotment. While Colbert and Lake really unbiased bear the same acting state throughout the movie, Goddard’s character has to change, so that viewers peep her passe from a skim by night flapper with only men on her mind, to a woman with a heart who lives to support others, not unprejudiced trace them with her oomph. It’s harder than it looks to stride that line, but Goddard pulls it off without a whimper. Often cast as the sexpot pure and simple, or the gold-digging mantrap she apparently was in steady life, Goddard is entirely persuasive in her role, and like Lake, she’s a natural at action scenes. I want her to be my nurse. Her romance with “Kansas” is kind of cute too.
All in all, an underrated movie with the kind of site that screws in deeper and deeper, unbearably tight, like DAS BOOT, except area in the Pacific.

`Lord of the Flies’ has been made into a movie at least twice since the William Golding unique of the same name became a cult classic / must read volume for high school and college students in the leisurely 1950s. The first version, which follows the unique very closely, was done in dark and white by the famed director, Peter Brook in 1963. The second version was done in color by Harry Hook and released in 1990.

Like many remakes in the same language, one immediately wonders why bother, as the unique Brook version is more than consuming enough to stutter the message of the new.
To highlight the differences between the two versions, let me outline the myth shared by the two versions.

The scene is location when an airplane carrying school children crashes in the South Pacific, of the soar of a remote tropical island. Soon, a sage evolves about the presence of a monster on the island. This creates the pretext for Jack to split off from the group with his tribe and perform a camp at a more defensible set. As this larger group becomes more and more musty, they raid Ralph’s camp and take Piggy’s specs since it is the only means they have for starting fires. To placate the monster, the head of a killed wild pig is lop from its carcass and stood on the top of a pole approach the suspected monster’s lair as an offering to the monster.
After a few days, Simon observes this pig’s head and its very tall collection of flies feasting on the festering flesh and imagines he hears the pigs head protest to him, hence, the source of the title. Simon is then killed when the hunters mistake him in the night for the monster.
When Ralph and Piggy straggle to Jack’s camp to recover Piggy’s specs, Piggy is killed by another `accident’ when Jack’s tribe members pry a tall boulder loose that falls on Piggy. Ralph and Jack fight, Ralph is driven off, and the whole tribe sets fire to the jungle to flush out Ralph and, presumably, ruin him. Both stories extinguish as Ralph runs to the beach to obtain himself at the feet of a very professionally uniformed member of his country’s elite armed services.
Hook spices up the dialogue by making the boys remarkable more hip with lots of convey words and references to contemporary favorite shows such as Alf and Miss Piggy of the Muppets. Unfortunately, Hook loses the two most valuable elements of the whole tale. In the beginning of the original and, subtly, in the beginning of Brook’s film, we observe that the world is once more at war and the boys from several different schools are on a plane to Australia to collect relative safety from the coming (nuclear? ) conflict. Hook shows nothing of this, giving us simply a group of boys from the same military academy on a breeze to goodness knows where. This totally looses the whole allegorical sense of the fable where the conflict between the boys mirrors the war in the world at colossal, especially the sense of the last scene where the world (island) is destroyed by the conflict (fire) .
The second major oversight in Hook’s rendition is that there is never enough attention given to the significance of the pig’s head, Simon’s vision, and the sense of `The Lord of the Flies’. A less indispensable point is that the origin of the monster narrative is different in the two movies. Brook’s film follows the book and has it be a misinterpretation of a billowing parachute from a fallen, slow pilot. Hook creates the narrative out of the spasms of the downed plane’s delirious pilot as he finds refuge in a cave and is rediscovered by Simon who believes he is a monster.
Both movies do a credible job of depicting the plunge of nominally civilized boys into savagery and fable. The combat between Ralph and Jack come the extinguish is straight out of Frazier’s `The Golden Bough’ on the epic of killing the king. Unfortunately, Hook’s version seems as eviscerated as the pig carcass, as all the gigantic allegorical of the unusual yarn are totally lost. And, as minimal as they were, I even deem the boys’ performances in Brook’s version are better done, as their initial innocence in the face of this loss of civilization makes their transformation all the more though-provoking.
Brook’s version is highly recommended.
It was a pleasure to inspect the unusual version of “Lord of the Flies” again. I’ll be enthusiastic in seeing the DVD version as well, to peep what additional material comes in that format. Having been one of the boys in the movie, I also appreciated seeing the reviews posted by other Amazon customers! I wonder if any of the other cast members have checked out this region…

I confess to liking the modern version far more than the remake, but that’s not surprising, I guess. I TRIED to hold an inaugurate mind when I saw the unique version, but, alas, I failed. My recollections of running from the burning jungle, coughing, onto the beach at the demolish makes a black-and-white rendition seem more staunch to me.
