NBC’s CHUCK is such a welcome surprise and one of the best and funniest TV shows I’ve seen in a while, something which normally is an omen for immediate cancellation (but, thankfully, NBC picked it up for the pudgy season) . CHUCK achieves that heady mix of humor, action, espionage, and even a high-tail of romance (or pining, to be more sincere) . And it’ll have you rooting for the nerd hero Chuck Bartowski, the physically hapless but nonetheless invaluable original member of the U.S. secret agent fraternity. Whereas, before, Chuck was someone who for thrills lived life vicariously thru video games and films, he’s all of a sudden forced to cope with experiencing the very intense trusty thing.

The 411 on the premise and plot: A rogue CIA agent, fair before being killed, downloads a wealth of top secret government files into the brain of his used college roommate Chuck Bartowski, a seemingly disastrous choice at first blush. Chuck is a social misfit, a computer geek who toils at the Nerd Herd electronics department of the Lift More supermarket. His attend system consists of his best bud Morgan, who’s even more of a loser than Chuck, and Chuck’s shapely, protective sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster), who is perpetually concerned for him and his lack of a social life. That Chuck lives with Ellie and her laid serve boyfriend, Captain Awesome, doesn’t exactly acquire him points with the chilly location. But, for Chuck, things are about to change.

Chuck meets Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski), who seems to really like him. But Sarah is really a CIA agent sent to wrest the stolen intel from him. Finding out that the top secret data is imbedded in his noggin, she is then assigned to preserve tabs on him. To do so, Sarah works at Wienerlicious and poses as Chuck’s chica. Meanwhile, the NSA trots out its top operative, the no-nonsense John Casey (the awesome Adam Baldwin), who as conceal hires on as a Bewitch More sales clerk.
Nowadays, anguish and intrigue lurk at every corner for Chuck Bartowski, who finds himself leading a double life and is now sometimes referred to as the Intersect (mostly by Casey) . He quick proves his value when the data in his brain enables him to set two and two together and recount an assassination attempt. Soon, he’s tangling with ninjas, dark agents, terrorists, and bombs – and that’s objective in the first episode. Further shows would unveil even greater anxiety and more mystery. Seeds of distrust are sown as Chuck also struggles with the constant hedging and fabrication brought on by his CIA and NSA minders. More importantly, despite obstacles do up by his nemesis, the depraved Asian dude Harold Tang (okay, he’s not really noxious…but he’s bald), Chuck’s trying out for the assistant manager gig at the Prefer More. Superb luck, Chuck.

CHUCK is a consistently comical, laughable note doubling as a straight-up gape thriller. There are plenty of slick, potent action sequences, but the heart of the series is the droll fish-out-of-water premise of the geek caught in serious cloak-and-dagger environs. The point to provides a loyal dosage of nerd/slacker humor which always has me smiling for the duration of the episodes. And, instead of Chuck suddenly developing kung fu skills, the series makes obvious that Chuck remains inept and a bit cowardly (Chuck would seize to refer to it as being “prudent”) . Zachary Levi as Chuck is wonderfully straight-faced yet has that funny timing down pat. He’s very sympathetic as a guy whose colossal heart is shyly on his sleeve.
Which leads us to another focal point of the show: Chuck’s tentative relationship with the pretty Sarah, who as a gawk is forever on her guard and who’s detached grieving over her original past with a fellow agent. But there’s a connection between her and our current Nerd Herder, as Sarah realizes that Chuck really is a most decent dude. But only time will squawk if it pans out. Australian Yvonne Strahovski is well cast as the lethal and accomplished secret agent, who can kick enemy agent heinie even a she dances sensuously with a clueless partner (yes, that would be Chuck) . Yet Strahovski, when called for, can lend a torn, vulnerable air to her calculating superspy (check out “Chuck versus the Nemesis” to behold fair how conflicted she becomes) . And, holy ministrone, she’s hot! On the other hand, I don’t contemplate the looming Adam Baldwin is hot, but he’s one of my current dudes to glimpse on TV. Fans of Joss Whedon will remember Baldwin from his memorable recurring roles in ANGEL and FIREFLY. Here, he makes for an intimidating sales clerk and government peer.
I am currently in solid geek heaven with CHUCK. Here’s hoping NBC continues to befriend this expose for a busload of seasons. Here’s to Chuck (and friends) waging war against irate Bewitch More patrons, staving off calculating co-workers, and also fending off some of the most diabolical enemies of America, mom, and apple pie. And all that while shouldering the stigma of a dead-end job. Draw to go, Chuck!
CHUCK did the one thing that any honorable series needs to do: it managed to fetch better as it went along. To savor it one has to be able to suspend quite a bit of disbelief. One has to imagine it somehow possible for someone to have the entire contents of the CIA computer database downloaded into the brain of a single human being. One further has to imagine that this person would “flash” on seeing people, objects, names, or whatever, recognizing a series of connections that would race any other person. Finally, you have to acquire that this individual would continue to work in their poorly paid job at Retract More while his advisors from the CIA and the NSA would work either alongside him in Grasp More or nearby in a wiener swiftly foot joint. A plausible premise? Of course not! But if you lop it a lot of tedious it provides one heck of a fun race.
Why would one crop it leisurely? Well, first and foremost because Zachary Levi is enjoyable in the title role. As Chuck, Levi is able to combine basic reliable looks with convincing nerdiness to a degree not often achieved on television. I’ve read that series creator Josh Schwartz originally offered the role to Adam Brody, with whom he had worked on his previous display THE O.C. I’ve also read that Brody was offered the lead in the extraordinarily big current series PUSHING DAISIES. I loved Brody on THE O.C. as Seth Cohen, but I consider both shows are probably better off with Zachary Levi and Lee Paddle.
A second major reason to nick CHUCK some leisurely is the astounding Australian import Yvonne Strahovski, who instantly became not only one of the most resplendent women on American TV as well as one of the best female action heroes. Her Sarah and Chuck have large chemistry and as we await the originate of Season Two next drop (CHUCK has been renewed, but there will be no more fresh episodes for Season One) one of the great questions is how things will progress with them. I also enjoyed Adam Baldwin (probably best known as “Jayne” on FIREFLY) as John Casey, though I assume they need to give his character some depth. In Season One he was scheme too worthy of a one-dimensional character. It wasn’t anything that Baldwin did; it was impartial the plot his character was written. Now, looking around on boards I know that a lot of people loved Joshua Gomez as Chuck’s best friend Morgan, but I found him an unending source of irritating distraction. If there is one character on TV that I would esteem to notice proceed from any point to, for me it would be Morgan on CHUCK. His and Chuck’s relationship doesn’t seem to be coded as joyful in any veteran sense, but you’d boom that Morgan wants to marry Chuck. He is fair that obsessed.
I liked that the explain managed to evolve and invent as it went along. When it first started off I was terrorized that it had no potential for such development, that it was going to degenerate merely to the “flash of the week” and no more.
2007-2008 has to be counted a triumph for Josh Schwartz. Though FOX had cancelled THE O.C. the previous year (actually, I deem they cancelled it in their minds after the absolutely abysmal Season Three, but let it go on to a more natural conclusion) . But he rebounded hugely with CHUCK and GOSSIP GIRL, two of the better shows of the current television series. He even managed some beneficial natured self-mockery as two clerks at Pick More play a game where they click to novel TV shows on cable and try to discover both the prove and season. As they click one of the lands on THE O.C. and says some droll things about it. And Schwartz brought over Summer herself from THE O.C., Rachel Bilson, for a couple of episodes.
I unexcited have some doubts about how mighty long term potential this series has. But I plan that after the pilot and was surprised that they managed to withhold it unusual through the entire first season. It is discouraged that we didn’t secure a fleshy slate of episodes due to the strike, but at least it will be abet in the tumble.

“So Proudly We Hail”, often comes in for more than it’s radiant fragment of criticism over it’s depiction of the qualified work carried out by nurses in the South Pacific during World War Two. Mention is made of the nurses looking like they have fair stepped out of the beauty parlour with makeup and hair all looking perfect. I’m always mystified by that reaction as I feel this production goes a long draw towards depicting the succor breaking and often extremely hazardous work that nurses carried out during the war in the Pacific. The film was made with the very best of intentions at a time when the outcome of the war was composed far from positive. Criticism has also been leveled at the propaganda inherent in parts of the script. Once again one has to plan this film in it’s time and situation and if it motivated people to feel patriotic about their country in time of war and at least partly informed the movie going public about some of the work of wartime nurses then that is a job well done in my thought.
“So Proudly We Hail”, traces the stories of 9 nurses from the time they leave San Francisco through the trials and tribulations of their service with the armed services in the South Pacific. Three in particular are focused on, team leader Lt. Janet Davidson (Claudette Colbert), vivacious Lt. Joan O’Doul (Paulette Goddard) and inwardly tormented Lt. Olivia D’Arcy ) Veronica Lake) . Their stories are interwoven through the valid life action of the group first being sent to Hawaii and then after a torpedo raid which sinks some of their companion vessels, being removed to the Bataan and Correigador regions where they care for and then attend evacuate the military and civilian wounded. The saga ends with the remains of their party being evacuated after worthy loss and suffering to Australia before embarking for home at the demolish of their tour of duty. The women experience all the deprivations of war and personal loss along the plan as Lt. Davidson falls in care for with Lt. John Summers (George Reeves) only to live in daily scare of him being killed while composed having a job to do as the team’s main source of strength. Lt. O’Doul (Paulette Goddard) experiences similiar feelings for “Kansas” (Sonny Tufts), the gangly soldier who wins her heart and in the most tragic spot Lt. D’Arcy who confronts customary demons and the loss of her fiance at the hands of the Japanese. Many hideous incidents darken the daily grind of the nurses work such as regular bombing of their medical camp by the enemy and having to experience all the distress and suffering of wartime casualties and death of loved ones. Each woman is touched in some plan by her involvement in the action and emerges the better for her experience. We watch the women work under not only unsafe conditions but in those that would test the sanity of the strongest person with daily shortages of supplies, shelter and food a constant feature in the daily work.
The film places large emphasis on the inner strength of the individual under fire whether it be soldier, nurse or wounded civilian. In this respect the film could never be judged superficial as many loyal life elements of this period are tied into the memoir. Much scenes abound in “So Proudly We Hail”, a standout is the scene during the evacuation of the camp when the nurses are stranded in one of the huts under fire and the true life treatment of war nurses in Nanking is mentioned as a telling reminder of the brutality of war. Lt. D’Arcy’s ultimate self sacrifice for the safe of the group tranquil is a scene that packs a precise punch with it’s graphic depiction of a suicide killing of enemy soldiers. All three lead actresses are standouts in their gain current design. Claudette Colbert delivers yet another mighty and totally convincing performance as the leader of the group. Long associated with extremely glamourous roles here she portrays a character forced under dreadful conditions to collected be strong for the sake of her nurses. Paulette Goddard in an Academy Award nominated performance is safe as the flighty mantrap with only men on her mind who develops into a responsible and dedicated nurse as her wartime experiences deepen her character. Veronica Lake also minus her o usual glamourous persona is effective in her role as the bitter nurse who is out to punish all Japanese because of the loss she has suffered. Despite the reported tension between Claudette Colbert and Paulette Goddard during filming none of that shows on veil as the main three actresses work very effectively together as the one team. One last standout in the cast is actress Mary Servoss who plays Capt. “Ma” McGregor the lead of the camp and in ultimate charge of all nursing staff. Her handsome scene where she faces the death of her wounded son is a stunner and the emotional highlight of the whole film.

Passed off as Hollywood’s removed conception of what war is like, “So Proudly We Hail”, offers mighty more than that and contrary to well-liked opinion in a number of scenes where appropriate, the women do present what the wear and ride of war work does to the individuals. I pick up the film a noteworthy depiction of war and the dread it causes. Mixed with horrific scenes such as Lt. D’Arcy’s suicide are curious ones like the simple Christmas celebration on the boat and the scenes showing operations being conducted factual in the middle of air raids. These can’t wait on to recede the viewer and instill even in the most hardened cynic a thought in the basic worthy of man. A apt fable is how I would picture “So Proudly We Hail”, and a film I recommend to anyone who believes in the power of a person’s inner strength to beat outside adversity.
If they are bringing THE HIGH AND THE Noteworthy to DVD finally, then maybe it’s time to unravel the complications surrounding this film and feature it on DVD. SO PROUDLY WE HAIL is one of the greatest of all war movies, and because it is told from a woman’s point of belief (so to shriek, it composed had a male director in the person of Trace Sandrich) it is sometimes ridiculed and derided, usually by armchair critics who should wobble a mile in a nurse’s shoes before doughty to denigrate her bravery under fire.

Claudette Colbert plays Janet Davidson. An fresh choice for a nurse, Colbert eschews most of her usual glamor (except for the San Francisco embarkation) and really gives herself to the share. Veronica Lake plays up her sunless side playing Lieutenant D’Arcy, a time bomb unbiased waiting to explode. Often seen as soignee and inviting, with that cute fringe of hair playing peekaboo with her eyes, Lake here is going for a Cornell Woolrich-style vengeance against the Japanese. If Tarantino had made Waste BILL in the 1940s Lake would have beat Uma Thurman in the role easily. She’s hotter than a pistol and she’s Ms. 45.

Paulette Goddard has, I assume, the most bright role and I agree with other reviewers who say this is Goddard’s best allotment. While Colbert and Lake really unbiased bear the same acting state throughout the movie, Goddard’s character has to change, so that viewers peep her passe from a skim by night flapper with only men on her mind, to a woman with a heart who lives to support others, not unprejudiced trace them with her oomph. It’s harder than it looks to stride that line, but Goddard pulls it off without a whimper. Often cast as the sexpot pure and simple, or the gold-digging mantrap she apparently was in steady life, Goddard is entirely persuasive in her role, and like Lake, she’s a natural at action scenes. I want her to be my nurse. Her romance with “Kansas” is kind of cute too.
All in all, an underrated movie with the kind of site that screws in deeper and deeper, unbearably tight, like DAS BOOT, except area in the Pacific.

Steve McQueen scorches the streets of San Francisco
Arguably the best crime film of 1968, and certainly one of the most influential films of the genre….”Bullitt” established new directions in the mood and style of crime thrillers, and firmly established McQueen as one of the key anti-hero stars of the 60′s. Based on the gritty novel “Mute Witness” by Robert L. Pike, this was the first, and only, time McQueen portrayed a police officer (albeit a maverick one) in his movie career. In 1968 Steve was then riding high on the success of his previous heist film, “The Thomas Crown Affair”, and “Bullitt” just propelled his star even higher into the cinematic heavens !
The plot is tight, economical and well crafted….taciturn, moody Detective Frank Bullitt (McQueen) is charged with the protection of a key witness vital to an upcoming trial involving Mafia connections. Whilst hidden away in a supposed secure location, the witness and his police guard are brutally gunned down by unknown assailants. The heat is turned up on Bullitt by his tough Captain (Simon Oakland) and the manipulative, opportunistic politician Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) to come up with the right answers fast ! Between the draining investigation, Bullitt struggles to maintain his relationship with his cultured, sensitive girlfriend, Cathy (Jacqueline Bisset)
Primarily coming from a TV series background, Englishman Peter Yates (directing his fourth movie) did a commendable job as director on “Bullitt”…producing a complex, intense crime thriller with a unique style that would ultimately influence many other films. Yates would later to go onto direct tough guy Robert Mitchum in the excellent 1973 “sleeper” crime film “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” !
And of course “Bullitt” is reknowned for it’s now legendary car chase between Frank Bullitt’s 390 GT Mustang and the two hitmen in their black, Dodge Charger 440 Magnum barrelling through the city streets and highways of San Francisco….just don’t pay too much attention to how many times they pass that slow-moving, green VW Beetle !!
The DVD transfer is excellent in both sound and picture quality, and the Limited Edition Collectors Set with the additional goodies (Single sheet poster, shooting draft, lobby cards etc.) is a real bonus for keen film fans !!
One of my favourite cop thrillers….McQueen sizzles on screen !!
A Few Thoughts … about an American Style Icon
I have read GQ and other men’s fashion magazines for the last 20 years. No single person is mentioned as a men’s style icon more often than Steve McQueen, and this movie defines his style most clearly. What I think that is not often understood, is why his style is so beloved. It is minimalist, yes, but also, this is someone not playing the middle class America game.
1) He lives in a small apartment. The furniture is ordinary, with a few hip 60′s touches. (Watch for the picture over his bed, his paisley bathrobe, the cool paper hanging lampshade, and a couple of hippie style items on the walls). You get the impression he owns about six pairs of clothes at most. He eats cheap frozen dinners (except for the occasional date at the cool San Fran Restaurant). He is not wasting this time and life keeping up with the Jones’s.
2.) He is not climbing the career ladder. On this case, he doesn’t give a thought to politics. He is not chasing the American ideal of success.
3.) Look closely and you will see his car, the most famous in any movie ever, is a olive drab color. Not candy apple bright red. It is a Mustang, a symbol of blue collar America. It is dusty, and he parks it in the street, not a garage. He does not inspect it for door dings every time he goes out to it. It has dents in it. You get the impression he doesn’t spend his free time polishing and waxing it.
4.) He doesn’t spend his time chasing money. He spends it on his job, trying to do what he thinks is right, not what is good for office politics and promotion.
5.) His clothes are 60′s pre-hippie fashion perfection (look for the extremely tapered legs, the suede loafers, and of course the famous tweed blazer and blue turtleneck).
In summary, I think it is funny that people idolize McQueen’s personal style in this movie and yet they don’t realize why. It is not just the stoicism, or minimalism. It is the old fashion American values (think Old West). Just something to think about as you watch one of my favorite movies of all time.

Better view than the DVD. But only worth renting, or if it can be purchased used or on mark down at $5 or less.
A great film with very problematic picture and sound quality on Blu-Ray. The source transfer for “Bullit” has obviously not been re-done for Blu-Ray, and appears to be the same source transfer used for the older DVD edition of this film. Although the superior medium and capabilities of a 1080p Blu-Ray disc make this an upgraded way to view this material, the limitations of an aging source transfer abound and call attention to themselves. Detail is OK in well lit scenes, much less so on indirectly lit surfaces and shadows. Blacks are unstable and milky, and there is motion judder and blur of in motion detail in shadows. Skin tone and texture show the waxy effect of DNR (digital noise reduction). Surface detail is mediocre at best. Sharpening is obvious and annoying. All in all a better view than the DVD version. But only worth renting, or if it can be purchased used or on mark down at $5 or less.

In Monk, Tony Shalhoub stars in the title role of Adrian Monk, a musty San Francisco detective placed on psychiatric leave. A fair narrative in the community, Monk solves unsolvable crimes via his towering intellect, photographic memory, and meticulous observations. But the one case that alludes Monk is the 1997 assassinate of his wife Trudy, which forever altered Monk’s capacity to compose his job. Suffering from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a number of curious phobias, Monk requires a personal assistant, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), for even his most basic daily activities. Yet Monk remains a police consultant on difficult cases, and he hopes to persuade Capt. Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to give him his broken-down job wait on. But Stottlemeyer and colleague Lt. The Monk (Season 3) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Mr. Monk Takes Manhattan” in which Monk and company pick a scamper to Fresh York City to investigate a lead on Trudy’s destroy given to Monk in the previous year’s season finale. But while settling into their hotel, a riot breaks out in the lobby, and three people are killed, including the Latvian ambassador (who was honest standing next to Monk) . With Monk’s identification of the killer’s left ear being the only observe observe description of the perpetrator, the NYPD must rely on Monk’s new skills in order to solve the crime… Other well-known episodes from Season 3 include “Mr. Monk Meets the Godfather” in which Monk is pressured by a local mafia boss to benefit solve the slay of five of his henchmen, and “Mr. Monk Gets Cabin Fever” in which Monk witnesses a Chinese gangland slay, prompting the FBI to dwelling him in the study protection program – harboring him in a cabin out in the middle of nowhere…

The DVD Report
Ignore all the overzealous praise of the show’s third season, while it is scrumptious and worth a take for fans of the series, next to the other boxed sets of the present this one pales in comparison and will not wait on as the best plan to glean someone twisted on Monk.
Monk’s third season is most illustrious for the unexpected and controversial firing of Bitty Schram and the hiring of almost carbon-copy Traylor Howard for the second half of the season. Without even a goodbye Sharona was remarried and shipped across America offscreen.
But I come by ahead of myself.
The season opened strongly enough with Monk, Sharona, Stottlemyer and, oddly enough, Randall all following a lead from the previous season to Novel York City, where, unsurprisingly, Monk had one of his trademark meltdowns.
The rest of the first half of the third season had all the hallmarks of the first and second seasons: the random celebrity casting, the fabulous explanations and Monk’s continual grappling with his condition. However, because of the show’s appeal to younger viewers many of the mysteries were dumbed-down and made more childish to bring in younger and younger viewers.
