Witch Hunter Robin is a 26 episode Japanese animation series state in the come future in Japan. This series is carried by its rich character development and its strong dramatic moments (which are neither forced nor overplayed) . The characters, even those who appear in single episodes, are defined deeply in a design that makes the watcher care about them. The storyline slowly (but not too slowly) unfolds within single episodes and across the series as a whole. An air of tension or mystery often permeates the position. Remarkably, this is all done with relatively puny action (many action scenes merely feature people staring at each other while they duel with psychic powers) and with remarkably petite nudity. This is a strong dramatic series that holds the viewer at the edge of his or her seat with plotline, not with cheap thrills.
The animation style compliments the storyline very nicely. Everything is cast in shaded hues complimented with pale colors. Faces, clothing, and architecture are highly stylized; mighty of it looks gothic or industrial. A strong emphasis is placed on visuals, particularly visuals of individual faces. While the individual characters and scenery are drawn technically well, the animators did have some problems. Some scenes feature computer-drawn backdrops that discover artificial, and cars for some reason are not drawn well when enthralling along the line of spy. Despite these drawbacks, though, the animation smooth looks gigantic.

The series only has two problems. The minor jam is the soundtrack, which is somewhat lackluster. The major scrape is the predictability of the storyline. In earlier episodes, when Robin is hunting other Witches, the writers leave small mystery as to who will be hunted at the ruin of the episode, even if it is supposed to be unknown. Often, the hunted Witch is the one character that Robin or someone else in the STN-J interacts with during the episode. The later episodes become less predictable, but a critical section of the series’s finale is disappointingly easy to infer.
I did not conception all of the extras on the DVDs, but both the character/equipment overviews and particularly the cultural information were useful.
Overall, this is a very generous anime series with trustworthy drama and characterization as well as a visually-pleasing animation style, although the predictable storyline and lackluster soundtrack inhibit it from being the best. I recommend it to any anime, sci-fi, or fantasy fan.
I’m more of the shojo fan. Series like Fushigi Yugi and Ceres Celestial Account have made it into my anime library. I have recently gotten into the shounen anime such as Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, and Corpulent Metal Alchemist. And I’ll be impartial, I worthy take the more boy-oriented anime where romance is second to the series and the narrative itself is the whole jist of the prove.
This is what appealed to me for Witch Hunter Robin. Although more shounen then shojo, Witch Hunter Robin is a mixture of action, mystery, and suspense with a inch of romance. I enjoyed all the characters and was even surprised by the itsy-bitsy twists and turns that pop out in later episodes. But what I treasure most about this series is that Robin is not a WHINEY, GIRLY, BRATTY 15 year stale who always has to Expose HER UNDERWEAR. She’s in fact a dilapidated young woman who is patient, and if not monotone, kind, and accepts responsibility.
This series has a Harry Potter meets the Matrix type blend. The witch hunting may bother a few (particulary Wiccans) but the overall message of the anime is certain. As Amon puts it “God never forsakes his creations”.

I originally saw this series on the Cartoon Network Adult Swim segment abet in 2005. Unlike most American cartoons this Ghost in the Shell (GITS) is geared towards a venerable audience. It offers a obedient mix of police drama, philosophy and sci-fi all rolled into one.

The 26 episodes are divided into two categories Stand Alone and Complex. Stand Alone episodes are simply that, a self contained episode that is engrossing, but doesn’t contribute mighty to the overall arcing storyline. These episodes can be skipped and you will calm be able to follow the Laughing Man storyline. Complex episodes are fraction of the overall Laughing Man storyline; miss one episode and you miss some information.

GITS is geared towards a outmoded audience because of the serious dialog. There are no “cute” talking animals like in other animes. However, to introduce a sense of innocence into an otherwise serious organization comprised of used military, Yakuza (organized crime), and police members are the Tachikomas. Tachikomas are lightly armored tanks with autonomous AI venerable by Fraction 9. When they bellow they have the narrate of miniature children which is in incompatibility to the more archaic sounding adults. The Tachikomas characterize an innocence that all members of Share 9 (or any adult for that matter) no longer have.
The basic philosophy around Ghost in the Shell is what a human being is and how your humanity will change as you upgrade your body using cybernetics. The title speaks for itself; “Ghost” is your soul, “Shell” is your body whether it is biological or cybernetic. A word of warning, unlike most cartoons made for the US audience, the dialog can become quite complex especially when dealing with philosophical issues and definite aspects of the Laughing Man case. Imagine the dialog between Neo and the Architect in The Matrix: Reloaded. Not something to hear every day; especially in cartoons geared towards kids. Speaking of the Matrix, the movie borrows a lot from Japanese anime and manga, including Ghost in the Shell.
The main yarn arc revolves around the Laughing Man. Who is he/she? Why did he/she commence a series of industrial blackmail and suddenly depart? Are there more than one Laughing Man? The companies that were blackmailed by the Laughing Man also received money from the government to occupy stock prices; is there some type of collusion taking spot? What is the significance of the quote, “I conception what I’d do was, pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes” from the book Catcher in the Rye? As the main account arc unfolds, some answers are provided, but many modern mysteries initiate up.
Not determined if it’s worth buying? Then scrutinize it or describe it on the Cartoon Network who typically broadcasts the series at 2:00am and 5:00am Monday through Thursday. Unfortunately as of is writing (10-15-06) the Cartoon Network has re-broadcasted all episodes of GITS SAC season 1. They are currently broadcasting the episode of Ghost in the Shell – S.A.C – 2nd Gig which is season 2 of the series. A very safe continuation of the series with an even more complex storyline.
Can’t wait for the next movie (not season 3), Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid Site Society, to be released in 2007 outside of Japan.
I stumbled on Stand Alone Complex completely by accident. I’d seen both previous films, and this unusual series caught me completely by surprise. With vital exceptions (Battlestar Galactica, Six Feet Under) this has more emotional and intelligent depth than almost any Western series you can deem of. Every episode subtly and delicately raises considerable themes that are worth serious discussion and consideration.
But those themes won’t be toothsome to an audience if it isn’t packaged in an eterntaining construct – which this series is. It has everything – some colossal action sequences (the Terrorist takedown in the first episode), terrific character development (name any of them), and a standout kickass musical get. The fetch by Yoko Kanno deserves special mention, as it runs the gamut from ‘cyberpunk techno’(sic? ) to attractive orchestral melodies. And the main themes for the series are serious attention-getters – one of the best I’ve ever heard.
All the characters are vividly drawn and beautifully realised. The DVD Boxset has both the new Japanese voices, as well as the English dub. It’s engaging to survey the differences between Atsuko Tanaka and Mary McGlynn’s rendition of the main character (Major Kusanagi) . The Japanese voices emphasises the philosphical and brilliant issues being raised. While the western dub makes the characters more satisfactory and approachable. It lends a enchanting slant to the series.
The toddle is powerful slower and more langurious than what action- or anime- fans are musty to. As a casual viewer, that’s fair stunning by me. Stand Alone Complex is the only series that has touched me on both an emotional and knowing level. I absolutely adore and fancy this series. Strongly strongly recommended for the open-minded viewer looking for emotional and lustrous stimulation from their film and TV viewing.

I was happy to peruse a fresh “supersized” history of WWII box dwelling approach to DVD, and being a superfan of this subject bought it. I wasn’t expecting a lot of modern footage but I opinion perhaps a fresh perspective would be refreshing.
I’m skittish disappointed is an understatement in describing how I felt while watching it… “War Chronicles” (Mort Zimmerman) was never my common of the WWII documentaries, and this box place is built entirely on these traditional reels.
Patrick O’Neal’s speak drones on like the engines of a tired stale bomber on a long rush to the heart of Germany. You hear shrimp else but his narration over the canned sound effects through the entire series.
I was particularly amazed at the lack of footage devoted to England and the Battle of Britain. Literally a couple of minutes!
A far better choice would be the “BBC History of World War II”, The “Definitive History of WWII” (Brentwood), “Visions of War” (Southern Star/IMAVision), or “The World at War” box sets.

Cronenberg’s legend of a viral driven apocalypse pulls the viewer into a world of death and contagion. RABID, along with other early Cronenberg films, deals with the alarm from within our contain bodies. The account centers on the birth of a disease, which eventually spreads to a vast city and causes social breakdown. With its curious storyline, unimaginative landscapes and creepy music, RABID stands out from other fear films of the 70′s in that it has Cronenberg’s “body conscious scare” philosophy leisurely it. Originally released on Warner home video in the 80′s and on a hard to fetch import laserdisc from Japan, this DVD of RABID is the best the film has ever looked. The image exhibits itsy-bitsy grain, the colors are strong (for early Cronenberg), and the sound is positive. It is presented here in chubby camouflage (1:33:1), which is possibly what the film was shot in. Also included on the disc is the full-length theatrical trailer. If you’re a fan of 70′s anxiety, Rabid is required viewing.
Rabid was Cronenberg’s second feature film and a more musty “alarm movie” than his first feature Shivers (aka They Came from Within) . Despite Rabid’s dilapidated script and gross budget restrictions it clearly showed that Cronenberg was a writer/director with a strong vision and someone to recognize for.
Rose (played unevenly by Marilyn Chambers) suffers severe wounds in a motorcycle accident. Experimental surgery turns her into a vampire of sorts that infects her victims with a incurable and fatal case of mania that resembles rabies. Rose, either fearing for her gain safety or forced by a novel and barely understood predatory nature (Cronenberg never explores this in any exact depth), escapes from the clinic where she has been recovering from her surgery and unleashes a evil plague. Although it may sound comic Cronenberg treats the subject with such an frosty documentary like detachment that the results are quite chilling.
Sadly the fragment of Rose (originally intended for Sissy Spacek) is underwritten, she has almost no dialogue and Chambers could not communicate any sincere emotional conflict in her performance. She becomes simply an object to go the status forward, the secondary characters getting more development. This was a serious flaw in the movie and the distinguished reasons I gave it three stars and not four.

The DVD itself is glowing murky. The movie is not letterboxed, but the image is not injured too badly by this. There is a trailer that produces a chuckle when, after an impressive car shatter, the camera zooms into Rose’s first victim and the narrator solemnly says “Don’t concern about him he’s Tiresome.” There is no commentary, and the biographies are heavenly so so, with Corman (founder and CEO of the companies that both released Rabid succor in 1976 and this re-issue) getting the most lauditory and in depth biography, despite having really nothing to do with making this movie at all.
Cronenberg fans will want this movie in their collections regardless of the movie and DVDs flaws. Fans of the genre might want to check this out to seek the boundless possibilites the vampire record does have to offer.

“Shigurui Death Frenzy” is among the most hooked anime I’ve ever seen and an outstanding vengeance account from a culture stuffed to the gills with similarly-themed works. It is based on fair events (whatever credibility you give to that) and takes status in feudal Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate. It’s spectacularly graphic in both the sex and violence departments, but features extremely sparkling artwork and a wobble and tone that is almost Kurosawan in it’s meticulous and thoughtful storytelling and features a very aesthetic musty Japanese soundtrack. But as artistic as it is, there enough mayhem, nudity, and general psychosis here to rival any Asian grindhouse flick I’ve ever seen. This one is not for the kiddies.

In the opening sequences the audience is treated to a retainer pleading with his daimyo to allow a tournament to utilize wooden blades rather than steel ones lest their most talented samurai die needlessly. He then opens up his slash belly and pulls his entrails out with his bare hands, telling his lord that that would be the only result of a tournament using valid swords. His final plea falls on deaf ears and bloodthirsty eyes that have more than a hint of madness in them. As the tournament begins we eye the first two samurai face off. It is a one-armed swordsman versus a blind samurai. While the audience mocks the pair, it is soon certain that the two are not only skilled warriors, but have a past together. The chronicle of “Shigurui” is that past.
Rewind to a few years help in time and we meet earnest sword pupil Gennosuke Fujiki and Seigen Irako, a stranger to the Kogan dojo who seeks audience with the sensei. The two clash, leaving Fujiki embarrassed and possibly stripped of his station as the heir to the deadly techniques of the sword school. Kogan Iwamoto is the deranged sensei whose advanced age regularly leaves him in a place of obscene dementia with a string of neverending drool in the corner of his mouth and a habit of urinating on himself even as he performs feats of swordsmanship. Even more disturbing, the man composed has a sexual appetite when in his glassy-eyed stupor. As Kogan’s concubine Lady Iku, she gets to have the brunt of that, though the sensei’s beget daughter gets a taste as well. The children of the town mumble a song about Iku’s body bringing disaster and death to all of her lovers, but that doesn’t deter Irako but getting a section of the action. This is something that he will regret as he seeks the title of heir to the secrets of the Kogan style. And eventually, each and every character will regret the chain of events that forms.

As I said before, “Shigurui” is not for kids even if it does seem like a typical samurai anime on the surface. There’s plenty of viscera, eyeball abuse like you wouldn’t acquire, decapitation, and dismemberment. In fact, the Kogan school seeks to spread it’s name not by killing those who challenge it, but by “giving them a recent glimpse” which is to say the reduce off various facial features so all of Japan can seek their prowess rather than hear about it. Then there’s the graphic sexual snort which includes watching Kogan’s drool descend upon his daughter as he “inspects” her suitability for breeding, a rather explicit but brief witness of cunnilingus -which I’ve NEVER seen in an anime (and no, I don’t count hentai as suitable anime) – and a woman getting her nipple sliced off then watching her attacker grasp it up and lovingly state it upon his tongue. Yeah, this is curved stuff. Kogan is among the most intimidating and disgusting villains ever and the rest of the cast are more tragic victims then heroes. In fact, I judge it’s qualified to say that there are no heroes here at all; honest brutality, cruelty, and selfish deceit.
I really wish I could give this a perfect gain because it is so harsh and uncompromising but detached manages a plethora of lovely and artistic flourishes that give this anime a credibility that few examples of the genre have anymore. But there is a fatal flaw that left me feeling less then thrilled at the conclusion in spite of the fact that the final destroy is quite possibly the most impressive I’ve ever seen sharp. While it is the best samurai anime I have seen in a long time, at only 12 episodes “Shigurui” becomes a victim of it’s enjoy wearisome pacing during the second half and the viewer can’t support but feel a bit cheated at the lack of resolution in the sage. After the extraordinary setup of the first episode, we never study it revisited for a fitting conclusion. It’s almost like the staff got bored and fair decided to depart on before the yarn was done. A few more episodes -even one- could have easily garnered this display an unapologetic five star rating. But frankly, it’s discontinuance enough. This is an anime that will absolutely warrant recount viewings.
I am very glad to say that this anime has been released in a plump boxed status suitable off the bat. None of the month(s) -long waits and customer-gouging
while each disc is released individually. Thanks, Funimation! While there is not great in the device of extras on the discs, there is a “marathon play” feature which means that the discs will play as a continuous film rather than making you fast-forward through the opening and closing credits every 20 minutes. I hope to observe more of these things in the future. They are reason enough to select this status. If we wait on more quality anime releases that retract the fans’ wishes into fable, maybe we’ll leer more of this kind of thing.
“Shigurui: Death Frenzy” is an outstanding adult anime that stops impartial short of all-time greatness, but is collected an absolute must-own for fans of titillating sex, violence, and chanbara films. The soundtrack, animation, space, and characters are all superb. It’s some of the best of classic Japanese arthouse cinema with all the cheap thrills of the grindhouse. Grasp, acquire, occupy!

To be fair, I almost abandoned Shigurui somewhere around the first 2 or 3 episodes. The virtues of this series are at first masked slack opaque layers of extremely graphic violence, sex and nudity. Not that I have a dilemma watching violence, sex and nudity. But too often are the three feeble as stand-ins for a missing memoir. But that is not the case for Shigurui. Our account here begins with a tournament between two samurai with severe disabilities that they were clearly not born with. Instead, these handicaps were brought upon them by an event (or events) in their lives prior to their stand off. From here, the record circles help to the beginning, following the breadcrumbs that lead to said tournament. It is here that we learn that these two men, Fujiki Gennosuke and Irako Seigen were competing successors to their master’s dojo. Fujiki, who was initially the distinct choice to follow in his master’s footsteps, is suddenly eclipsed by Seigen. However, sex, betrayal and Fujiki’s need for redemption and revenge re-tips the scales of the myth. That is when things turn really rotten.

Seeing the frightful deformities of the two men at the beginning foreshadows the volume of carnage that you can put a question to to explore in Shigurui. Do not underestimate the visceral impact of this violence because the series is bright. The explicit detail of a man’s entrails rivals what you’d ogle in a live action version. The favorable news for those with a broken-down stomach is that, thanks to minimal animation, you typically will only inspect the before and after of some disturbing slicing and dicing. The poor news is that the swiftly cuts between a raised sword and a hashed body amplifies the tension, and the long takes of a sliced off limb gives the imagination plenty of time to either recoil or recover from the aftermath. You’ll be given pleasant time to meditate on the upper piece of a person’s face. To succor in your meditation is an atmospheric soundtrack that makes the image either terribly putrescent or strangely poetic. Or both.
This dichotomy alone might be the brilliance of Shigurui. By walking the line of gratuity and minimalism you certainly gain a feeling of art and not pornography. Even the explicit nudity and sex is so disturbing that it neutralizes any inherent erotica. You also rep a smart rupture (or chop) from the usual capable versus horrible thing. Shigurui offers us no protagonists or antagonists. There’s only an ensemble of characters who stand on the same nihilistic stage and under a morally ambivalent spotlight that casts no judgment on any action or ambition – no matter how scandalous. All men are truly created equal in this series: equally skittish. Equally troubling. And equally curved.
