How do I relate THE Story OF DESPEREAUX? On the one hand, it’s got pleasant animation, incredible content acting, and intelligent characters. On the other hand, it has a few too many characters, grown-up themes, and requires the viewer’s rapt attention. On the interesting hand, it’s unbiased not for small ones. To be certain, it’s aesthetic for young ones to glimpse, it unprejudiced seems that they are not the film’s intended audience. This is outlandish since it LOOKS like it’s a kid’s prove. It was advertised as a kid’s present. But my 4-year-old only watched when Despereaux himself was on the camouflage, and my 11-year-old spent most of the movie telling me how different it was from the book. My husband and I liked it, but we all agreed it was simply “OK.”

THE Fable OF DESPEREAUX is actually a couple of tales, starting with the anecdote of a sea-faring rat named Roscuro who loves soup. Through a infamous twist of fate, Roscuro’s presence results in the queen’s death (death by soup, contain it or not) and the banning of soup and rats from the kingdom. I had to wonder why no one had opinion to banish the rats before but eh. Roscuro ends up in the dungeon where only the rats hang out. The second sage is about Despereaux the mouse. We decided that Despereaux must be Flemish for “Dumbo” since that’s pleasing remarkable who this mouse looks like. He can even soar with his giant ears. Despereaux is literally brave and as such is banished from mousedom for fright of the other meeses learning his unpleasant traits. Guess where he’s banished to. That’s proper, the rat dungeon. Another narrative is about a peasant girl who dreams of being a princess. Apparently, this was toned plan down from the modern, in that the girl’s owner only sneers at her and doesn’t beat her in the movie. We discover how she is sold to the king’s cook along with a herd of pigs. She eventually teaches us a lesson about jealousy. Then there’s the king’s record. He’s so unlit at the loss of the queen that he bans soup and rats (as we’ve covered) and sits in his room all day plucking a mandolin. His sadness manifests itself as gray clouds and no rain – everything dies. Then there’s the princess who wishes she could fix everything, the jailer who wishes he could undo a tragic mistake, a cook who wishes he could once more develop soups, an execrable rat who doesn’t seem terribly bad, and, and, and… As I said, there’s a whole lot going on.

The short retort is that THE Anecdote OF DESPEREAUX itself is not offensive, but there are better options in this genre. Select a survey at Dragon Hunters, for instance. It deals with the same themes as Despereaux (honor, courage, valor) but my family liked it a lot more.

*Spoiler Alert. A question was made to add this for people who don’t like to seek storyline*

My daughter wanted to glimpse this film. Probably because the ads showed a cute mouse. We had never heard of this book so I can’t contemplate the myth.

The qualities of the stories are simple. Mistakes, redemption, pure of heart, honor, etc.

The movie opens with a ship heading to a city. On it is Roscuro the rat. Wearing cloths and an ear ring he looks forward for the noted Soup of the day of the kingdom of Dor. Wandering through the city he accidentally finds himself in the royal hall as the royal family are first to try the soup. Too entranced with the smell; Roscuro falls into the Queens soup and she is jumpy to peer a Rat, suffers a heart attack and dies. The guards crawl him and he eventally falls into a drainage where he lands in Ratworld. There he is discovered by Botticelli who befriends him and decides to boom him the trustworthy ways of being a Rat.

The grieving king then declares no more soup and rats are outlawed and any who harbor them will be punished.

Despereaux is born in mouseworld. He is not a typical mouse. Smaller then normal and he has over-sized ears. What’s worst is that he doesn’t cower, accelerate, and he likes to buy the cheese from mouse traps. His parents are called into school and told he is about to fail since he does not cower from knives and he draws pictures of cats. Even names one fluffy. The school master suggests that Despereaux follow his brother who graduated and was a top-notch mouse and could negate by example.

They head off to the library where Despereaux is supposed to eat books but instead he starts reading them and learns about knights, honor and questing to keep the pleasing princess. This eventually takes him to the Princess Peas room where he befriends her as she is spellbinding by his gentlemanly ways.

Eventually, Desperaux is found out and he is punished as he has gone too far by talking to a human.

He is sent to Ratword where no mouse ever returns. The rats procure him and toss him into a Colosseum where he is to be sacrificed to a cat.

Roscuro notices him and sees that he is different. He decides to attach him by declaring he wants to eat him. Botticelli, leader of the rats, agrees as he had been downhearted with Roscuro since he was refusing to eat flesh.

In Roscuro’s room, Despereaux tells Roscuro about knights, chivalry and his quest to set the princess. Roscuro recognizes the princess is the very girl whose mother he caused to die and decides to aid as he may pick up a chance of redemption by telling her he is sorry.

I could go on but I don’t want to completely spoil the film. Overall I liked the film as the hero really doesn’t solve all problems. It’s more cause and achieve that guides the record. The actions of one affect another. Happiness is lost and as the narrator says a hero appears when most needed. Despereaux is the hero and he actions effects others and causes actions which cause the return of happiness.

The cast is valid. Sigourney Weaver does a gargantuan job as the narrator. Matthew Broderick as Despereaux and Dustin Hoffman as Roscuro. Emma Watson as the princess(though I must admit I view was Emily Watson) . Tracey Ullman as Miggery Sow. Kevin Kline as Andre the soup master. Ciaran Hinds as Botticelli(though I must admit I plan Peter O’Toole would have been better) .

Visually the film is heavenly and the music adds to experience in the lawful ways.

Violence wise it’s gorgeous righteous. There is fighting but you don’t contemplate things like stabbing, etc. It can be intense especially with the Rat chases and the rat gladiatorial scenes but it’s not too poor. My girl is sensitive but she only wanted a runt comfort but she collected kept her eyes on the cover.

My daugher wants to watch it again as it’s a immense film in her conception and I contemplate it’s was worth the theater designate. My daughter has already declared we have to win the film when it goes to DVD.

The Wanderers is many things…an urban gang drama, juvenile comedy, changing of the times recognize and more. It works on all these levels and has become a certified cult classic. At it’s core, the Wanderers is about the final death of the innocence of the 1950′s. The Wanderers are an Italian gang in NY, serene clinging to the last vestiges of the 1950′s with their matching satin jackets and grease-backed hair. Early on several members accelerate afoul of another gang, the renowned ‘Baldies’. The Wanderers accept themselves trapped until a newcomer, the titanic Perry saves them and is immediately welcomed into the gang by their leader Richie (Ken Wahl) .

The various members of the Wanderers have problems to deal with on their fill. Richie has gotten his girlfriend, Despie, pregnant, Perry’s mother is an Alcoholic, Turkey wants to join the Baldies and Joey has an abusive father who thinks his son doesn’t measure up. The Wanderers have a verbal war with a dark gang, the Del Bombers, in school and determine to determine things with an used rumble.

When the Wanderers cannot gain any other gangs to help them up, Despies father (Dolph Sweet) a neighborhood mob boss steps in and decides to finish the rumble and have the gangs resolve their differences with a football game instead…with a lot of mob money riding on the outcome. The game climaxes when the two gangs, along with the rest in attendance, must join together to fight “The Ducky Boys”, a group of vicious, seemingly homosexuals, who have crashed the game with hundreds of members.

Mixed in with the drama and action is a liberal amount of juvenile buddy comedy as the Wanderers ‘accidently’ bumb into women on the street in order to touch their breasts. This is how the meet Nina (karen Allen) a bohemian girl who Richie becomes infatuated with. There there are drunken parties, games of strip poker, etc. In one memorable scene, the drunken Baldies join the marines.

Through all of this is the theme of the changing of the times. The doo-wop of the 1950′s is now being replaced by folk music. A poignant scene has Richie following Nina until she enters a club where (in sound anyway) Bob Dylan is playing. Richie doesn’t enter as he seems to know that it’s objective not his world. The film also covers the assasination of John Kennedy as the symbolic death of innocence. It is this moment the galvanizes the strained relationship between Despie and Richie.

One wishes that the Ducky Boys had been better explained. They are a creepy group of men..older than the other gangs…who never impart and were actually seen taking Holy Communion in one fraction where Turkey enters their turf by mistake and his killed. What were the Ducky Boys representing? It’s the one mystery of the film.

The Wanderers has a amazing soundtrack of early 1960′s hits including “Soldier Boy”, “Waddle Like a Man”, “Runaround Sue”, “Yowl”, “Colossal Girls don’t Bellow” and of course the title track.

This is a movie that holds up unexcited after 25 years because it works well on so many different levels. This was mostly a cast of unknowns with Karen Allen perhaps being the most essential star a year after she did ‘Animal House’. An delicious movie from beginning to raze.

“The Wanderers” is a class act and a stylish movie that has a brassy toughness to it that is both infectious and consuming. It was probably overshadowed on it’s release by the other gang movie of 1979 “The Warriors”, but “The Wanderers” easily holds an equal footing as an agreeable period section of working class lives in 1963. The film centres around the lives of a gang of young boys in the Bronx in mid 1963 coming to terms with friendships, school, girls and other gangs. Ken Wahl ( a promising actor who for some reason never quite made it to the sizable time!! ) plays a large lead as the unruffled talking and charismatic, Richie, the leader of the Wanderers. Richie is struggling to enjoy his gangs strength and status in the local neighbourhood as well as juggling his many relationships with different girlfriends. He meets a young and comely Karen Allen whilst out on the streets with his buddies, and from there another relationship develops. Allen plays her role with style, and even though Allen is not a enormous beauty, she has that unmistakable feminine charm, especially when that fantastic smile lights up her face.

What makes the movie all the more spirited is the arrangement it goes leisurely the scenes into the home lives and the hopes, fears and dreams of some of the gang members. We witness Joey’s artistic talents keep down by his fearsome, aggressive father…we gape Turkey struggle with his beget identity within the different gangs…and we gape Richie forced to consume responsibility for his actions advance the film’s conclusion. Backing the movie up, is a dynamite soundtrack containing some top numbers including “Stand by Me”, “Runaraound Sue”, “Soldier Boy” & of course “The Wanderer”!!

A movie that has charm & talent, and stands up to repeated viewings with ease…if you haven’t seen it already….accumulate up with “The Wanderers” soon!!

`Lord of the Flies’ has been made into a movie at least twice since the William Golding unique of the same name became a cult classic / must read volume for high school and college students in the leisurely 1950s. The first version, which follows the unique very closely, was done in dark and white by the famed director, Peter Brook in 1963. The second version was done in color by Harry Hook and released in 1990.

Like many remakes in the same language, one immediately wonders why bother, as the unique Brook version is more than consuming enough to stutter the message of the new.

To highlight the differences between the two versions, let me outline the myth shared by the two versions.

The scene is location when an airplane carrying school children crashes in the South Pacific, of the soar of a remote tropical island. Approximately 30 of the children, ages 6 to 13 compose it to shore and get on the beach to work out how they are to survive and catch that since they are far removed from their modern destination and the island is runt and uninhabited, there is a apt chance it will assume a long time, if ever, for grown-ups to secure and rescue them. The first two principle characters are Ralph, one of the two or three oldest boys who we meet first, in the company of an radiant, bespectacled, slightly overweight boy of the same age known as `Piggy’. The third main character is Jack, about as ragged and as fit as Ralph. Three minor named characters are Simon, who is prone to fainting and `seeing things’ and Sam and Eric, a pair of twins.

An early vote sets up Ralph as the leader, with a few rules establishing a conch shell found by Ralph and Piggy in the first reel as the symbol of the honest to jabber to the gathering of boys. Jack immediately assumes the responsibility as leader of a `gang’ (later to become a `tribe’) of hunters who will also seize responsibility for maintaining a signal fire which Ralph succeeds in lighting by using Piggy’s eyeglass lens as a means of concentrating sunlight on a clump of tinder.

Jack’s gang gets keen too worthy in hunting and allows the signal fire to go out unprejudiced as an aircraft flies reach the island. Soon, a sage evolves about the presence of a monster on the island. This creates the pretext for Jack to split off from the group with his tribe and perform a camp at a more defensible set. As this larger group becomes more and more musty, they raid Ralph’s camp and take Piggy’s specs since it is the only means they have for starting fires. To placate the monster, the head of a killed wild pig is lop from its carcass and stood on the top of a pole approach the suspected monster’s lair as an offering to the monster.

After a few days, Simon observes this pig’s head and its very tall collection of flies feasting on the festering flesh and imagines he hears the pigs head protest to him, hence, the source of the title. Simon is then killed when the hunters mistake him in the night for the monster.

When Ralph and Piggy straggle to Jack’s camp to recover Piggy’s specs, Piggy is killed by another `accident’ when Jack’s tribe members pry a tall boulder loose that falls on Piggy. Ralph and Jack fight, Ralph is driven off, and the whole tribe sets fire to the jungle to flush out Ralph and, presumably, ruin him. Both stories extinguish as Ralph runs to the beach to obtain himself at the feet of a very professionally uniformed member of his country’s elite armed services.

Hook spices up the dialogue by making the boys remarkable more hip with lots of convey words and references to contemporary favorite shows such as Alf and Miss Piggy of the Muppets. Unfortunately, Hook loses the two most valuable elements of the whole tale. In the beginning of the original and, subtly, in the beginning of Brook’s film, we observe that the world is once more at war and the boys from several different schools are on a plane to Australia to collect relative safety from the coming (nuclear? ) conflict. Hook shows nothing of this, giving us simply a group of boys from the same military academy on a breeze to goodness knows where. This totally looses the whole allegorical sense of the fable where the conflict between the boys mirrors the war in the world at colossal, especially the sense of the last scene where the world (island) is destroyed by the conflict (fire) .

The second major oversight in Hook’s rendition is that there is never enough attention given to the significance of the pig’s head, Simon’s vision, and the sense of `The Lord of the Flies’. A less indispensable point is that the origin of the monster narrative is different in the two movies. Brook’s film follows the book and has it be a misinterpretation of a billowing parachute from a fallen, slow pilot. Hook creates the narrative out of the spasms of the downed plane’s delirious pilot as he finds refuge in a cave and is rediscovered by Simon who believes he is a monster.

Both movies do a credible job of depicting the plunge of nominally civilized boys into savagery and fable. The combat between Ralph and Jack come the extinguish is straight out of Frazier’s `The Golden Bough’ on the epic of killing the king. Unfortunately, Hook’s version seems as eviscerated as the pig carcass, as all the gigantic allegorical of the unusual yarn are totally lost. And, as minimal as they were, I even deem the boys’ performances in Brook’s version are better done, as their initial innocence in the face of this loss of civilization makes their transformation all the more though-provoking.

Brook’s version is highly recommended.

It was a pleasure to inspect the unusual version of “Lord of the Flies” again. I’ll be enthusiastic in seeing the DVD version as well, to peep what additional material comes in that format. Having been one of the boys in the movie, I also appreciated seeing the reviews posted by other Amazon customers! I wonder if any of the other cast members have checked out this region…

I confess to liking the modern version far more than the remake, but that’s not surprising, I guess. I TRIED to hold an inaugurate mind when I saw the unique version, but, alas, I failed. My recollections of running from the burning jungle, coughing, onto the beach at the demolish makes a black-and-white rendition seem more staunch to me.

It was abominable enough that the writers decided to produce Kira, Athrun, Lacus, Cagalli and the Archangel the Enlightened Saviors of the war loving world again. In turn resulting in Shinn, Lunamaria and the Minerva becoming the abominable mis-informed awful guys. However, since this change occured so slow in the series it’s like the creators didn’t know what to do so they stretch out what runt of a site they have left. Plus the flashback montages hold on coming.

The first episode picks up with Shinn and Rey double teaming Kira. Kira basically dodges their attacks and occasionally gets a hit in. Shinn eventually is stopped in his tracks by the allege of Athrun in the Infinite Justice Gundam. Athrun makes him ask what he is doing and we glean a long montage of conventional clips, why?! Considering Shinn has shown nothing but contempt for Orb and all those associated with it up until now you’d assume he’d have no reservations about attacking it. He should’ve responeded with something like, “This country’s ideals got my family killed and since then it’s only shown how evil it’s become by providing sanctuary to someone like Djirbil. This country will burn!” If they want Shinn to be the dreadful guy, antagonist the writers should’ve gone all out and made him firm, acting on his fill vendetta. Instead he’s nothing but an unquestioning, totally trustworthy slave to Durandal who if he hears any contradicting words to his orders is lost and unable to do anything. That is until he hears reassuring words from Rey to spot him assist on course. This is exactly what happens after Shinn hears Athrun’s words and simply says, “Shut up, you’re nothing but a damn traitor,” like he’s totally brainwashed. Athrun goes into Seed mode for the first time in Destiny which was plan to freakin gradual. All he does to top that off is raze Shinn’s sword and the two unprejudiced peek at each other. Why couldn’t Athrun at least continue to disable the Destiny Gundam to prevent Shinn from doing more damage? Better yet why couldn’t Shinn simply answer with another attack chunky force after taking a hit like he did with Kira in the previous episode? Kira all the while is fighting Rey who he can handle one on one since the Tale Gundam is basically the Providence Gundam with a different paint job. Then Shinn and Rey recieve orders to retreat and the fight is over, yawn! Really if Athrun wanted to convert Shinn he should’ve gone after Rey who kept putting words in Shinn’s ear. Then Shinn could objective maintain figting Kira who he had no reservations about fighting at all, unlike Athrun who he calm cares for a runt.

The first episode could’ve been really splendid but it harm up being the biggest let down in the series so far. Shinn, Rey and the Minerva are the trump card for ZAFT and Kira, Athrun and the Archangel are the trump card for Orb. If either falls the side they’re on looses. However since there are no other major players in the fable now with Sting, Auel and Stella humdrum the writers couldn’t figure out what to do to maintain the episodes so they have the two factions fight each other with no accurate conclusion, victor. They got to do that so they can have a station, fight for the demolish of the series. Too awful they couldn’t introduce current ace pilots from the Earth Forces to fight both Orb and ZAFT or even introduce fresh Orb Aces honest to fight ZAFT. Anyway off my soap box now.

The next episode is a transition one. The problem of two Lacus’s is revealed to the world. Lacus with Cagalli at her side tells the world not to trust Durandal. Well even though she knows about the Destiny Conception unless she presents her evidence to the world they have no reason not to trust Durandal. Especially since their bloodlust is collected heavily aimed at Logos. Meanwhile Djibril who escaped from Orb fires the mass destruction weapon Requiem at the Plants, killing masses of Coordinators. ZAFT is naturally ready to kick some major butt. What do Kira, Athrun, Lacus and the rest do? Exertion about Durandal and his Destiny View. Yes Durandal is planning to place a dictatorship through scheming, but compared to Djibril he’s a saint. Oh yeah and lots of Coordinators objective died and they don’t seem to concerned about that at all! You’d assume Athrun who’s been pining over everything else up to now would at least be riled up. We learn in detail what the Destiny Conception itself is and I got to say it’s over the top. I guess they have to maintain Durandal the villian somehow. I didn’t inquire of great from this episode, but it was collected spiteful.

We net a major battle on the moon in the next episode. Is it any satisfactory? Noooo!!! Shinn and Rey basically fair hold out the same mobile armors and shriek suits all over again. A lot of it was recycled footage from the battle at Heavens Detestable with outer region inserted in the background since they’re on the moon. The only new thing to reach out of it was Lunamaria destroying the control center on her occupy. The episode ends with the Archangel heading up to residence. Cagalli must stop slack and assume care of her political duties and I’m not sorry to scrutinize her go. On the shimmering side Neo Roanoke has been given the Akatsuki. While Rey may be a abominable guy I part his conception that the Lacus site doesn’t really matter since she’s a celebrity and not ZAFT’s leader. I always found it annoying how everyone was ga ga over Lacus unprejudiced because she was a pop star. When Rey says, “Even if she is the genuine one does that mean the fallacious one is always tainted,” and we sight that brief clip montage it’s handsome distinct Rey is a clone of you know who. Another lackluster episode.

The last episode is about Kira, Athrun, Lacus and Meyrin confronting the Lacus double Meer. Meer could’ve been moving if she had been forced to cease on the Minerva for awhile and interacted with other characters besides Athrun. She was isolated the whole time and wasn’t seen distinguished so I didn’t care that she bit the colossal one in the kill. Lacus is given some of the lamest, corniest dialogue imaginable. Sometimes she comes off more annoying than Cagalli. An spirited thing is when Lacus gets frustrated at Kira while trying on clothes and says, “You don’t care what I wear do you?!” It’s the first time you feel like the two of them are a couple. The two of them could easily be passed off as brother and sister since they’ve only hugged a few times. This disc was overall disapointing but it’ll withhold you enthusiastic enough to want to ogle the last one.

I have purchased this DVD and also Volume 10 when they were avaiable. Both have defects .At first I opinion it was a plight with my DVD player with volume 10.But when I tried to play volume 11 I found out it is not the plight of the DVD player but the DVD itself.I have seven DVD player at home which I bought at different time because I know some outmoded DVD player may not be able to play the latest DVD.This volume 11 has dilemma with episode 45.All the DVD player could not play this segment including my PC.So potential buyer should eye if they want to risk inability to conception the product in their DVD player or they should wait for the manufacturer notification that they have fixed the compatibilty plight.

This film provides an opportunity to notice the road to the presidency of an unlikley candidate in Bolivia. The filmmaker’s access to Evo Morales and some of his supporters and allies provides a window into a political process that is both organic and extremely organized and hierchal. The power of community organization seems to outshine education, money, even ideology. The film also shows us the lives of women and men who live off of coca production, whose business has become more safe as a result of the US crackdown on cocaine production. This relative profitability is also a grand political tool to rally farmers tedious this canditate. The complexities are somewhat burried in the yarn, but the perspective is sufficiently unusual to support you watching and thinking.

Move over War Room, James Carville and Bill Clinton, and effect blueprint for Cocalero, a fresh political documentary featuring highlights of the triumphant Presidential campaign of Evo Morales, a Bolivian Indian and leader of Andean coca growers’ union.

The film sets out to do two things: first, to highlight Morale’s campaign and picture him in the most charming intention possible, and, secondly, to point to the spot and dignity of the Andean Indians whose crusade against coca eradication has made them a cause célèbre among anti-American activists throughout the world- including the U.S. It succeeds on both levels even as it avoids an enlightening, non-partisan recognize at the consequences and rationales late the anti-coca campaign.

The makers of Cocalero were given terrific access to Morales and you can’t succor but approach away liking him. You view Morales campaigning down bustling city streets, stumping for votes in dirt-poor native farming communities, gamely spinning gotcha journos on television, and waxing eloquently from the podium before throngs of supporters. All the while, you’re struck by his low-keyed personality. This is not the kind of populist leader we’ve arrive to demand. Morales is certainly charming and possesses a stout sense of humor, but his manner is quite often underscored, and, at times reserved. He bears almost no resemblance to his bombastic, ideological partners Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.

In addition to Morales, the filmmakers exercise quite a bit of time with Leonilda Zurita, a rural candidate for Senate living in a thatched roofed shelter with no walls and no running water. At one point, Zurita leads fellow members of the women’s coca union in chants: “Viva Comrade Evo, Viva the coca leaf, death to the Yankees.” Typically I would have a bit of discomfort when hearing folks yowl “death to the Yanks”, but one glimpse at the frailty of the assembled crowd and the jocular manner in which they hurl their chants get them seem more farcical than a threat.

The Zurita parts are engaging. Here’s a lady campaigning for Senate, one of Morales key politicos, and at one point in the film we study her apologize, as she offers a bowl of eggs to the camerman, that she “wasn’t able to get the chicken.” At another, we glimpse Zurita as she helps bring in the harvest of the coca leaf.

Another keen vignette shows off the PR skills of Adriana Gil, an resplendent woman with obsolete European looks who during the campaign worked as the spokesperson for Morale’s political party, MAS. Gil is clearly a first-rate face and a strong spinmeister who was brought in to assuage the city people of St. Cruz who were mostly supporting the other candidate amid cries by Morales that he would try to expropriate land from those in cities who “had too mighty,” and give it to the farmers.

If you want to plan firsthand a titillating foreign political process at work amid some glorious and moving scenery, this documentary will be well worth your time. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a dispassionate conversation about American and Bolivian coca policy and the expedient and poor of American foreign policy, this one won’t satisfy you.
