Captivating
Finally the Armenian Genocide arrives at the big screen. Ms. Arslan is such a gifted story-teller. Her style is effortless because it is based on true events in her own family. For about two hours she transports you to another time and era. Genocide is not statistics anymore, it is flesh-and-blood that you can identify with.
And don’t forget the Taviani brothers. I fell in love with the first movie that I saw from them (Un uomo da bruciare). After over 50 years, they still got it. It is a pity that they are not better known in the US.
This is not a propaganda movie. It is a study of how humans strive to do the right thing under the most adverse situations.
Every school library should have a copy.

THE INTERNATIONAL is a film that wants to be two kinds of movies at once, and somewhat drops the ball on being either very effectively.

This tells the memoir of an pain by law enforcement officials to bring down The International Bank of Business & Commerce, the IBBC. This bank, we’re told just from the commence, is fervent in weapons trading and many shady deals entertaining violent overthrows of governments and so forth. They don’t really form money off the arms dealing, they originate money handling the debt of the newly emerging governments. They are a ruthless bunch, operating like a sad intelligence agency…assassinating those who stand in the map, bribing others. There is no diagram to bring them to justice, it would seem, because they have their fingers in every pie, and will destroy anyone who might pick up in their map.

So first, THE INTERNATIONAL wants to be an “radiant” thriller, with lots of suspense generated by the political and economic machinations of men in business suits talking in hushed tones. We witness the estimable guys and the abominable guys both discussing with each other the ramifications of one course of action or another. There is lots of globetrotting, with scenes in Luxembourg, France, Italy, the US & Turkey. These scenes are only moderately challenging, because in the waste, the schemes of the bank are only drawn out in the most simplistic terms (the movie wants us to FEEL that everything is richly detailed and complicated, but it really isn’t) . AND, most importantly, the actions of the bank don’t really feel entirely credible. Not that a financial institution wouldn’t align itself with some really poor guys…but the whole thing really objective feels like a half-baked Roger Moore-era James Bond kind of status.

The other half of the movie wants to be an action thriller of the BOURNE ilk. But the action and gunplay and forensic police work is mostly quite staid and uninspired. With one critical exception. There is a fabulously define, visceral and titillating gun battle situation in the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Naturally, it relies on the aged standby that all abominable guys are dreadful shots and top-notch guys seldom miss…but it’s a thrilling, passe sequence that makes the rest of the movie almost worthwhile.

Also worthwhile is the always solid presence of Clive Owen. Here’s a guy who can really act, when given the chance. He can be charming, he can be soulless…but he’s seldom lifeless (and he’s always vaguely half-shaved…talk about swarthy) . Yet accurate stardom has eluded him, because the truly best material doesn’t go his blueprint…or when something flat-out sparkling like CHILDREN OF MEN lands on his lap, no one goes to observe it. Owen is the fair man for THE INTERNATIONAL, though. He’s reliable of handling the talky dialogue. He seems vaguely impatient with all the chatter and politics, and unbiased wants to gain on with taking some people DOWN. And when the action does kick in, he’s not unbiased an impervious gunslinger…we ogle proper terror and loyal afflict. We gain that he is a hero who COULD obtain killed. He brings a humanity to the most “Hollywood” of scenes and he brings movie star glamour to the most mundane of scenes. It’s an challenging dichotomy.

Owen is the star of the film…no put a question to. He is in nearly every scene, and director Tom Tykwer likes to give us lots of close-ups. But Owen is assisted by a sold supporting cast, including the always welcome Naomi Watts. Her role is seriously underwritten and probably could have been handled by anyone…but it’s nice to stare her anyway. The silky-voiced, menacing Armin Muehler-Stahl also shows up as one of the head honchos from the bank. This guy has THAT character down pat, and he’s also always welcome.

Tykwer can be a big director (Speed LOLA Speed is a propulsive film in the best possible blueprint) …and the gunfight shows where his lawful talents lie. He doesn’t bring distinguished zest to the talkier scenes, and I hope someone notices this and gives him a more action-packed thriller to helm.

Overall, I enjoyed THE INTERNATIONAL, but for most of its 118 minutes, I was quite aware that what I was seeing was not going to leave grand of an impression. It’s a solid but seldom tantalizing movie. It wants to contemplate it has captured the flavor of our times, but it isn’t rooted enough in believability. If you like Clive Owen, I’d say it’s worth a leer. If you’re not a particular fan…then there’s very limited reason to consume time on it. It’s a advance miss.

This film was very well done: Noble Fable, Genuine acting, Gracious directing and camera work. It highlights one of the things in our society that noone wants to accept: government is not a astronomical brother that will select care of you, but an institution. The system not only can be bought, but has been for a long time now. And, this is a very well done film about objective how that works.

Everyone thinks that the US Constitution is about giving citizens rights, but that is not what it says and not the purpose of it. It is an attempt to limit the power of government so that it doesn’t net the power to reign over us the scheme governments in the rest of the world do. But people today have forgotten the simple fact that any organization that is mountainous enough to recall care of all your needs is tall enough to select all your rights away.

Some of the greatest French movies have been remade for US audiences and no one knows about it: Trois hommes et un couffin/Three men and a baby, The Talented Mr Ripley/Plein Soleil (With Alain Delon – where do you consider Matt Damon got his pointers? ), Le Retour de Martin Guerre/Sommersby… among others. La Femme Nikita is yet another that is draw above its American counterpart, The Point of No Return with Bridget Fonda, and deserves its maintain set in your movie collection. The TV series doesn’t count.

Nikita was written and directed by an (at the time) up and coming Frenchman by the name of Luc Besson (Subway, The Professional, the Fifth Element…) who has improbable mind for action, study for cinematography and sense for musical scores (Nikita has some gargantuan industrial sounds which you can also pick up in the Fifth Element) . Released in 1991, this film pre-dates the canonized litany of films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

More importantly, and as some reviewers have famed, Nikita combines thrilling action and tension (without expensive FX) with a very touching sense of humanity. Here you have this junkie social reject turned into a well behaved, qualified, yet deadly government agent. It’s involving how the government selected someone about to go to jail rather than picking from a horde of enthusiastic, patriotic young recruits that would beg to do the job. Their fault is that they recall that this reject is objective effectively a machine and has no redeeming human qualities. As the film progresses, you look that Nikita yearns for intimacy and like – it’s what makes her vulnerable and it’s also probably what makes her so great.

Some criticize the ending for not been satisfying… Aesthetic enough, it’s clearly a “French” ending, but I contemplate it’s the legal ending. The governments wants her to be an suited machine, her boyfriend wants her to be a nice petite wife and nurse. Neither of those are really who she is and that’s the ending is such.

As for the language scream… The French or subtitled version is the only draw to go. So remarkable of acting is in the speech and delivery that accepting a dubbed version basically says that you deem actors are objective fine faces. The sizable thing about the DVD is that you have the French, Subtitled and English version all in one. Granted, I enlighten French. But I abominate watching American movies dubbed in French objective as poor.

La Femme Nikita is/has become somewhat of a cult classic in the US (already is in France) and is one of the movies that build Besson on the draw. Regardless of that, it stands on its beget as a enormous movie. Highly recommended….

The movie gets five stars, but this fresh special edition disc gets one. I gain the previous MGM release of this movie which was widely known to have many narrate and subtitle problems. I loved the movie enough to lift this current version. With my fingers crossed, I popped the disc in…

…zut alors! The anamorphic widescreen portray quality is peaceful lousy. Grainy, occasionally pixelized. Eye at patterns in the background during the movie and the problems are quite evident. For example, in one scene when Nikita is in training and chatting with her trainer Bob in her room, a grill on a part of furniture on the left side of the cloak creates a hugely distracting pattern that always diverts my watch.

But we score some special features with this special edition, moral? Only with the most liberal definition of “special.” These empty chats and documentaries are considered standard features for most other DVDs, so I’m not determined what we’re supposed to believe is special. There’s even an easter egg, though it’s not hidden, so I guess it’s fair an egg. But since it’s unprejudiced a short status of film clips, not all that gripping, I guess it’s a obnoxious egg.

There are a few improvements. The English subtitles are better less distracting to those of you who grunt French. The 5.1 soundtrack is smooth solid, though not noticeably better than the one on the unique MGM disc. I’m not positive if it was remixed. If you don’t gain a copy of this movie, by all means acquire the special edition. If you believe the previous version, learn from my mistake and either sustain you novel version or sell it and select a old-fashioned copy of the special edition. Or lobby MGM for a steady “special” edition.

I originally saw this series on the Cartoon Network Adult Swim segment abet in 2005. Unlike most American cartoons this Ghost in the Shell (GITS) is geared towards a venerable audience. It offers a obedient mix of police drama, philosophy and sci-fi all rolled into one.

The 26 episodes are divided into two categories Stand Alone and Complex. Stand Alone episodes are simply that, a self contained episode that is engrossing, but doesn’t contribute mighty to the overall arcing storyline. These episodes can be skipped and you will calm be able to follow the Laughing Man storyline. Complex episodes are fraction of the overall Laughing Man storyline; miss one episode and you miss some information.

GITS takes status in the year 2030; which is after the 4th World War, and revolves around Public Security Piece 9, or simply Allotment 9. It is an elite anti-crime organization that specializes in cyber terrorism. The team is mostly comprised of cyborgs with the exception of one; Togusa who’s only cyberization is a brain implant. Many of the initial episodes are Stand Alone, but eventually the main sage arc begins to emerge when an unresolved six year outmoded case called the Laughing Man case.

GITS is geared towards a outmoded audience because of the serious dialog. There are no “cute” talking animals like in other animes. However, to introduce a sense of innocence into an otherwise serious organization comprised of used military, Yakuza (organized crime), and police members are the Tachikomas. Tachikomas are lightly armored tanks with autonomous AI venerable by Fraction 9. When they bellow they have the narrate of miniature children which is in incompatibility to the more archaic sounding adults. The Tachikomas characterize an innocence that all members of Share 9 (or any adult for that matter) no longer have.

The basic philosophy around Ghost in the Shell is what a human being is and how your humanity will change as you upgrade your body using cybernetics. The title speaks for itself; “Ghost” is your soul, “Shell” is your body whether it is biological or cybernetic. A word of warning, unlike most cartoons made for the US audience, the dialog can become quite complex especially when dealing with philosophical issues and definite aspects of the Laughing Man case. Imagine the dialog between Neo and the Architect in The Matrix: Reloaded. Not something to hear every day; especially in cartoons geared towards kids. Speaking of the Matrix, the movie borrows a lot from Japanese anime and manga, including Ghost in the Shell.

The main yarn arc revolves around the Laughing Man. Who is he/she? Why did he/she commence a series of industrial blackmail and suddenly depart? Are there more than one Laughing Man? The companies that were blackmailed by the Laughing Man also received money from the government to occupy stock prices; is there some type of collusion taking spot? What is the significance of the quote, “I conception what I’d do was, pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes” from the book Catcher in the Rye? As the main account arc unfolds, some answers are provided, but many modern mysteries initiate up.

Not determined if it’s worth buying? Then scrutinize it or describe it on the Cartoon Network who typically broadcasts the series at 2:00am and 5:00am Monday through Thursday. Unfortunately as of is writing (10-15-06) the Cartoon Network has re-broadcasted all episodes of GITS SAC season 1. They are currently broadcasting the episode of Ghost in the Shell – S.A.C – 2nd Gig which is season 2 of the series. A very safe continuation of the series with an even more complex storyline.

Can’t wait for the next movie (not season 3), Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid Site Society, to be released in 2007 outside of Japan.

I stumbled on Stand Alone Complex completely by accident. I’d seen both previous films, and this unusual series caught me completely by surprise. With vital exceptions (Battlestar Galactica, Six Feet Under) this has more emotional and intelligent depth than almost any Western series you can deem of. Every episode subtly and delicately raises considerable themes that are worth serious discussion and consideration.

But those themes won’t be toothsome to an audience if it isn’t packaged in an eterntaining construct – which this series is. It has everything – some colossal action sequences (the Terrorist takedown in the first episode), terrific character development (name any of them), and a standout kickass musical get. The fetch by Yoko Kanno deserves special mention, as it runs the gamut from ‘cyberpunk techno’(sic? ) to attractive orchestral melodies. And the main themes for the series are serious attention-getters – one of the best I’ve ever heard.

All the characters are vividly drawn and beautifully realised. The DVD Boxset has both the new Japanese voices, as well as the English dub. It’s engaging to survey the differences between Atsuko Tanaka and Mary McGlynn’s rendition of the main character (Major Kusanagi) . The Japanese voices emphasises the philosphical and brilliant issues being raised. While the western dub makes the characters more satisfactory and approachable. It lends a enchanting slant to the series.

The toddle is powerful slower and more langurious than what action- or anime- fans are musty to. As a casual viewer, that’s fair stunning by me. It gives the viewer more time to digest the significant concepts being raised, and also a chance to savor the tone and atmosphere of the improbable world that is being woven before our eyes.

There are a few films that have touched me intellectually, and there are a lot that have affected me emotionally and viscerally (LOTR, Doctor Who, Star Wars Novel, Star Waddle, etc…) . Stand Alone Complex is the only series that has touched me on both an emotional and knowing level. I absolutely adore and fancy this series. Strongly strongly recommended for the open-minded viewer looking for emotional and lustrous stimulation from their film and TV viewing.

One of the all-time classics in a must-own DVD
The 30th Anniversary Edition of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was originally botched as a fullscreen-only effort. However, Warner listened to the people and gave them a wonderful widescreen transfer.

Colors are vibrant, the 5.1 Dolby Digital track is very nice, and there are a handful of cool extras. There is the 30-minute documentary “Pure Imagination” which shows some of the cast today, including all the children and Gene Wilder himself. The interviews of the cast looking back at the movie which was the defining thing for so many of them is very interesting. The documentary on the whole is rather fulfilling. While one feels that the documentary could have delved deeper and maybe been an hour-long, at a brisk 30 minutes, the pacing seems okay and it won’t leave you wanting too much more. There is a limited amount of archival on-set “B” roll footage, but all that is there is interesting.

Also included is the original theatrical trailer (Warner left off the 25th Anniversary trailer that was on the original DVD release from 1997), a 4-minute featurette on the production design, and a feature-length audio commentary from the children, who have now grown up. The other features – “character bios” and sing-alongs – are pretty much fluff features. Since this was one of my most anticipated DVD releases of the year, I can’t help but feel Warner could have done more in the way of extra features – games, outtakes, deleted scenes, etc. Nevertheless, the overall content of this DVD is satisfying enough.

As one of the greatest films of all time, and certainly one of the most enjoyable musicals and most enjoyable films of the 1970s, “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory” has a timeless feel to it. This DVD deserves a place in every collection.

If you like the movie, then know better than to be the fullframe edition, which was released earlier. Widescreen in the original ratio is the only way to go. Especially in a few years from now, when we all have 16 x 9 widescreen TVs, and that “fullframe” version leaves you with big bars on the side of the TV. See the movie the way it was made and meant to be seen – in widescreen. And when you do get that 16 x 9 television, guess what – the widescreen DVD will fill your screen!

A classic movie with classic peformances, and a wonderful amount of heart. What are you waiting for — get the widescreen 30th Anniversary Edition DVD of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory so you can enter a world of pure imagination today!

Oompa-Loompa, doopity do, I’ve got another puzzle for you!
WOW, I can’t believe how long ago this film was made and how wonderful it is even today! It really doesn’t seem like it’s from 1971. I have probably seen this film over 500 times by now, since the 80′s and I still am not the least bit bored of it. At 28 years old, I still totally love this film!!! The characters, especially Gene Wilder who plays Willy Wonka, who is THE Willy Wonka, who could never be topped EVER (yes I’ve seen the 2005 film!), the music, the setting, the songs, and especially the Oompa-Loompa’s! Everything in this film is so wonderfully done and everyone who hasn’t seen it yet, needs to as soon as possible!!

My favorite place or scene in the whole film has to be the big candy and chocolate room where Willy Wonka sings “Pure Imagination.” Not only for the song but because I can see how much work the director put into this film. All the candy and chocolate looks so real and alive and the whole room looks so beautiful the way everything is set up! I also love that teacher, Charlie’s teacher that you see a lot until they go into the chocolate factory, he is so funny! And it’s set in London, an added bonus!! I just cannot get enough of this film or recommend this film enough!! It’s a masterpiece!!! It’s definitely one of my favorite movies of all time!!!

Who could not love Veruca’s “I Want It Now” performance? That whole scene was totally brilliant!

The Special Widescreen Edition DVD has tons of extras. There is commentary by the kids who got to go inside the factory. You’ll also learn that Gene Wilder wouldn’t play Willy Wonka unless he was able to do that somersault that he does before letting the kids through the gate. There is an interview with Gene Wilder from 2001, The Making of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, four sing along songs, a 1971 behind the scenes featurette, and a photo gallery.

Candy is dandy…
The film is based on a much-loved children’s book, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, by Roald Dahl. Dahl wasn’t always happy with the changes made between his book and the film, and wasn’t always consulted on them. Today probably more people are familiar with the film sequence of events than the book. Charlie is a down-on-his-luck boy who is nonetheless optimistic and happy. He and his mother work to tend for their bed-ridden family members, all living together in a one-room home.

One day there is an annoucement that Wonka is going to open his factory to visitors, to be chosen more or less at random through finding the Golden Tickets, contained in Wonka bars (a brilliant marketing device back then). Scenes of shoppers’ frenzy are shown all around with world, including a Wonka delivery van shown arriving at the White House.

The five golden tickets are found all around the world – the first one in Dusselheim, Germany, by the fat boy, Augustus Gloop (played by Michael Boliner, who is now a tax accountant in Munich, and is still rather large). The second ticket was found in the UK, by spoiled brat, Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole, the only Wonka child still acting), whose father, Roy Kinnear, is a well-known actor in British cinema. The third ticket was found in the USA, by gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde (Denise Nickerson, now an accountant at a nuclear plant in Colorado), whose used-car-salesman father was played by Leonard Stone (who was selected over Jim Bakus). The fourth ticket was also won in the USA, by Mike Teevee (Paris Themmen, considered a real brat by most of the cast and crew); his frantic mother was played by Dodo Denny (later Nora Denny), who was one of the few minor characters in the film to consistently act after this film. The final ticket at first is reported to be won by some shady businessman from Paraguay, but in the end, that is proven to be a forgery. Of course, Charlie buys a Wonka Bar expecting nothing, and gets the ticket.

An ominous figure, Slugworth (the arch-enemy of Wonka – who knew chocolate makers also made arch-enemies?), appears to each of the winners, whispering in their ears. Charlie is also confronted, and promised a reward should he bring Slugworth an example of Wonka’s latest creation, the Everlasting Gobstopper. One wonders why (a) any candy maker would make a candy that never wears out (thus defeating re-sales), and (b) why Slugworth can’t just buy one himself when they are released, analyse it and ruin his own factory the same way? But I digress… Gunter Meisner, a very prolific German actor, played the villain, who wasn’t in the book (nor was the ‘gobstopper plot’).

The grand day of the event, the winners enter the factory with great fanfare, meeting Wonka (Gene Wilder) for the first time, and get the first taste of his bizarre sense of theatre. (It is reported not only Wilder’s idea for the limping/somersault introduction to the crowd, but also a condition of his accepting the role.) From that point on, what was truth? It is ironic that Wonka’s entrance doesn’t occur until the film is half over. What we remember of the film comes after this, but over half the film is actually set-up. This is rather like the Wizard of Oz, where most of the film is done before we see ‘the major character’, although admittedly Wonka is far more prominent than Oz’s balloonist.

Wonka, the man of mystery, only ever became even more of a mystery as the tour progressed. He is constantly switching his words (‘we have so much time and so little to do’), and there are surprises at every turn. Wonka borrows a lot of his key phrases (Ogden Nash, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde) and there are a lot of fantasy-inspired elements (Alice in Wonderland, Lord of the Rings).

At each major scene, something ghastly seems to happen, but in epic-fantasy form, it doesn’t seem to matter to the majority, who proceed onward with their quest. In the chocolate room, Augustus Gloop meets his untimely exit from the factory by falling in the chocolate river. Violet turns into a blueberry by chewing experimental gum, and has to be squeezed (squoozed?). Veruca, in the room with the geese who lay the golden eggs, turns out to be a bad egg herself, but has a sporting chance of going down a chute with an inactive furnace. Mike Teevee shrinks in the Wonka version of the Star Trek transporter beam, leaving in the end only Charlie, who is denied his prize of a lifetime of chocolate for a minor infraction.

It would seem that Wonka had a sinister side in many ways – the boat that carries the prize winners only seated eight, implying that Wonka knew someone would be missing. The Wonkamobile only had seats for four guests. Of course, the children apparently all had sinister sides, too, including Charlie, until the end. None of them let Wonka know of their Slugworth contact.

In the end, we never know what becomes of the fallen questers – we are led to believe that in this candy factory they got their just desserts. The Oompa-Loompas put the moral to each downfall in song, with a 1970s karaoke-type presentation of the lyrics as they sing. In the end, of course, goodness and justice win out, as the factory is given to Charlie after his act of unwarranted kindness toward Wonka.

Director Stuart always saw this film as a ‘realistic’ fantasy film. Those things that are not over the top are very ordinary. The people are not superheroes, and the situations, while fantastic, are not beyond the credible. Stuart also did his best for ‘real’ reaction – the kids had never seen Gene Wilder before his appearance at the door, the chocolate room in the factory, or the Oompa-Loompas prior to the first scene, either, so their reactions are more natural.

Looks like it is just repackaged from the 4 volumes earlier this year.
I looked at this set in the store today and it really appears as if the contents actually are the 4 Ultimate Collectors Volumes inside this case with Craig’s Casino Royale along side. And by the contents being the 4 Volumes, literally, it looks like they are inside this black box.

I opted for the Ulimate Collector’s Bundle for $179, instead of this, since I purchased Casino Royale when it was released, and I am really just looking for all the previous movies from Connery to Brosnan in the remastered 2-disc versions.

Also of note, if you want all the Bond films- you have to order Never Say Never Again as a separate item, that is not part of the MGM/UA library.

Great content, awful packaging
Yes, it’s all 21 movies with 21 bonus discs. All that’s phenomenal. But the packaging is awful. That gorgeous box in the picture? It’s the flimsiest fold-and-assemble cardboard out there. Inside, the movies are not presented in chronological order. Instead it’s vol. 1-4 of the Ultimate Edition, stuck in this flimsy box. They’re all thin-line cases with the liner notes stacked to the side in the box. You can’t put them in the individual cases with their respective movies. Sure, you could buy 20 blank cases, but then it wouldn’t fit in the box they gave you. Now all that’s for the first twenty. Then stuck on the end, is the normal 2-DVD package of Casino Royale. It’s added on like an after-thought.

This is great product, but with the absolute cheapest way of presenting the material imaginable. It’s in no way comparable in quality to the Star Trek ten movie set. Truly, all they did was stick the old, hodge-podge Ultimate Edition sets and the Casino Royale two disc in a flimsy box.

CHEAP.

I’m okay with it because I got lucky and bought in on the $95.99 release day 24-hour super sale (which goes to show you just how much they’re marked up). If I’d paid over $200 for this, I’d be livid.

With all that said, the movies themselves look great – digitally remastered, etc. Again, great content, very amatuer presentation.

Region 1 is Shortchanged Again
I am deducting 1 star because the packaging is not worthy of the ultimate James Bond set.

While Europe and parts of Asia get the stunning attache case box set, the US and Canada get only a cardboard box. OK. A shiny cardboard box.

Inclusion of Casino Royale, notwitstanding.

I saw this on TV and I concept I’d learned all the stuff these documentaries usually have to say, but I only saw unbiased the second half of it or so and it was tantalizing, and I learned a lot of fresh things, even though I’ve already seen a few documentaries on AIDS at school, and I have read a lot about it.

This documentary was really engaging and really effective. It had lots of novel information, and a really deep impact, and at the destroy of it, it ended honest so powerfully that my sister and I objective looked at each other, and both of us had tears in our eyes.

I really assume everyone should study this documentary. It ties in science, socioeconomic stuff from around the world, talks about the US, and fair… is really extraordinary.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive history of the AIDS epidemic covering the last 25 years, this would be an pleasurable area to originate. This 2 share documentary covers 4 hours of material presented in a meticulous and precise manner.

The first half of this program begins with a detailed timeline beginning in 1981 exploring the first AIDS cases diagnosed in America. What started as a purported homosexual disease rapidly became a heterosexual disease and then splintered into intravenous drug user groups and eventually ended up threatening the national blood supply system. In this same year, a few European countries diagnosed current AIDS cases of their gain and this was the early warning signs of the soon to be massive AIDS epidemic.

Medical research is explored next and it spotlights not only the discovery of the HIV virus in 1983 but looks at the many difficulties experienced by scientists as they try to combat and eradicate this deadly organism. The drug AZT, designed to benefit in controlling the disease is touched on briefly but its overall impact later on was not as primary as once hoped.

Social, economical, and the often turbulent political elements of the AIDS crisis are examined in-depth for the latter half of this first installment. This was a very great opinion considering all these factors have such a pivotal and influential impact on a global scale.

The second fraction of this documentary starts with an examination of AIDS spreading throughout the African continent at an alarming rate and then looks at how AIDS cases have pervaded Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, India, and China. The implications of this disease spreading throughout some of the world’s most populous countries are scary enough in itself.

A watershed event occurred many years into this epidemic and it was the medical discovery of an aggressive drug treatment ancient to combat AIDS, but it wasn’t a cure. Unfortunately, it came with an titanic ticket effect to treat each individual patient and the jam this caused for underdeveloped and abominable countries is discussed in this segment.

Finishing off this documentary is an examination of activist’s efforts, prevention programs, and sex education as these all play indispensable supporting roles in the continuing efforts to combat the AIDS epidemic.

If I ever behold another presentation on the topic of AIDS, I am going to measure it against this unbelievable PBS documentary. The scope and detail of this material is far ranging, very informative, and exceedingly well presented. I highly recommend this program to everyone.
