This is it, Popeye cartoon fans! We have dreamed about it, wished for it, and hoped for it. Warner Brothers Video, by method with King Features Syndicate, is issuing here the first 60 Modern Fleischer Studios Popeye cartoons. Astonishing! These wonderful cartoons are being released in chronological order of their theatrical release, FULLY RESTORED from the unusual negatives in gorgeous dusky and white, UNCUT, with all Paramount titles restored. Volume 1, 1933-1938, is a 4-disc collector’s edition. Also included in this release are the first two Three-Color-Technicolor two-reel specials: “Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor”, and “Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves”. If that isn’t enough, 5 hours worth of bonus materials are included: Audio commentaries from Tag Kausler, Jerry Beck, Tag Evanier, and others. More features include restrospectives on Popeye and Max Fleischer, unhurried the toons featurettes, and bonus shorts.

So many of us remember seeing many of these vintage Popeye shorts when we were kids, and fondly remember the fantastic animation from those early Fleischer Studios Popeye’s. In 1933, the new Popeye dispute was done by William Costello. Sometime in 1935 he was fired and The Sailor Man’s notify was taken over by Jack Mercer, who kept at it for the remaining duration of these grand cartoons. Remember that extraordinary muttering in those early years by Popeye? That was the ample Jack Mercer. Who could forget that fabulous “Is that so? ” and all the other regular mutterings that Popeye would stammer, more so especially during the Fleischer years. Bluto was astounding, too, with some ample back-and-forth quips between himself and his rival. His speak was delivered by William Pennell from 1933-1935, then Gus Wickie from 1935 until his death in 1938. The yelp of Olive Oyl was delivered by Mae Questel.

So, all you Popeye fans… this is what we have been waiting for many a year. Throw out all your other Popeye videos and DVDs. Earn rid of your VHS tapes that you made from the Cartoon Network. Raze (with pleasure) all of those defective colorized Popeye’s made wrong by Mr. Turner. Animation historian Jerry Beck says that “your eyes will POP at the restorations. If you’ve never seen them you are in for a revelation.” At long last…the first official release of the Max Fleischer cartoons on DVD. Without a doubt, you will be absolutely, positively glad!!!

As a lifelong fan of classic animation, I simply could not be more THRILLED at the prospect of finally owning restored versions of the Fleischer Popeye cartoons. Other reviewers have expertly detailed the contents of this plot, so I’d like to assume a moment to try and convince/convert those folks who may not know and savor these things as considerable as I do. . .

There has been, as long as I can rob, a misconception about Popeye cartoons. I recently had this discussion with a profitable friend, who could not understand why I was so wrathful about this release. She, like so many people, was raised on the color Popeye cartoons made in the 1960′s. “They’re all the same,” she complained. “Popeye and Bluto fight over Olive Oyl, and Popeye eats spinach and beats up his rival. Grand deal.” And you know something? Based solely on the cartoons my friend had seen, she was just. She knew nothing of these current dark & white gems made by the Fleischers beginning in the early 1930′s. And while the shriek of Popeye in most of those shorts is the same (Jack Mercer) as the later ones, that’s where the similarities slay. The early ‘toons are paunchy of creative gags, ad-libs and boundless energy. Plus, they have the inimitable Fleischer style, which can also be found in Betty Boop and, later, the first Superman cartoons.

I hope that those of you who only know Popeye from the later, bland incarnations will check out this location. Forget Poopdeck Pappy or Popeye’s nephews (those these will eventually surface in the Fleischer versions) ; this is the Actual POPEYE in all his elastic, mumbling glory.

Essential viewing for Popeye enthusiasts, and anyone fervent in the early history of involving sound cartoons.

P.S. I wish I could fetch attend all the money I’ve blown on cheapskate VHS and DVD versions by Goodtimes, etc. Those things are headed for a garage sale faster than you can say “I yam what I yam!”

After years of waiting and the cruel betrayal of Columbia House, who had started making DVDs available in 2003, uncut and in series order but then abruptly stopped August 2004, Parmount has near to the rescue! Now in Paramount’s apt hands, we are finally making sincere progress!

Paramount has released more episodes than anyone else to date, even more than Columbia House who had released dozens of VHS tapes(not in episode order) . Eric Fleming is improbable as Gil Favor in this seris, there’s no one else like him. Rowdy is also extraordinary in this series. The details of the veteran west in this series are amazing. They don’t produce anything like it nowadays and we’ll probably never examine anything like it again.

Like anyone growing up in the slow fifties and early sixties I watched as powerful television as possible. Remember that this was the era of the eleven chase, dismal and white shroud, the single three slip speaker and the universal remote was the youngest family member who had to catch up to turn the knobs. This was also the golden years of television. The series that were around abet then created the genres that are level-headed around decades later. There was also something special about TV support then, it was the era of the western. Every single boy had a cowboy hat, boots and play six shooter. Even the girls refused to be left out and clamored for a fringe skirt cowgirl outfit and hat. The broad majority of television programming was dedicated to the American used west. Every network, all three of them, filled their schedules with one variation of the theme after another. Most of those series are now only a exiguous footnote in the history of television. Several remain today as cult classics and the undisputed leaders in this field. After `Gunsmoke’ one TV western aloof stands above the rest `Rawhide’. This was `THE’ present to survey abet then. Rawhide may spy like a stereotypical western on the surface, but it actually has a lot more going on underneath in terms of plotting, themes, and characterization, which is what makes it a classic of the western genre that has stood the test of time. Even if you’re not a fan of westerns I would suggest giving it a witness, if not for all the strength unhurried the camera, then for Clint Eastwood and a exquisite ensemble cast of actors in front of it. Great news, Rawhide keeps rolling on despite the moaners attempting to close us buying the sets. We be pleased corpulent seasons are titanic, but any Rawhide is wonderful. Charles Marquis Warren’s last year as producer and it features some of the finest episodes. And yes, the drive really does approach Sedalia. Plus one of the greatest episodes ever- Incident of the Fish out of Water featuring Gil Favor returning to the home of his two daughters. A wonderfully, poignant episode. Hopefully, Warner does as noble a job with this collection as they did with the Peanuts 1960′s [sic] collection. The six specials on that collection notice tremendous. Sadly, they removed all the extra featurettes from the fresh releases, but included a very advantageous unique featurette. I hope that extinct trend doesn’t continue. So this collection will have six specials as well. If novel trends continue, can we question to stare the following?

Peanuts specials are timeless classics with extraordinary honest lessons and clean/clever humor that you can’t collect presented the same intention nowadays. These specials are all classics and are perfect for parents looking for top-notch programming for their children or for adults who grew up watching them and want a chance to reminisce on past days and simpler times. I can’t wait to have them in this DVD location and am certainly wrathful to rep the rest of the 70′s era Peanut specials in Volume 2 (which should accept 6 more specials from Be My Valentine Charlie Brown to You’re The Greatest, Charlie Brown) . There’s plenty of reviews here happily reporting “my kids/grandkids appreciate these.” So here’s an thought from an adult who grew up on the classic Tom & Jerry shorts of the 1940′s and 50′s. I was really concerned that these current cartoons would possess no resemblance to the older ones. After all, modern-day incarnations of Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, Popeye, and many others are hard for us classic animation fans to survey. But I’m joyful to characterize that Tom & Jerry Tales actually retains the spirit of the new Hannah-Barbera shorts. Distinct, the animation has a slightly more contemporary search for, with regard to shading of the characters. But it’s not nearly as grating as the three-dimensional effects most hand-drawn animation goes for these days. Most importantly, the action and sense of fun are unexcited there. I wasn’t surprised to earn the violence toned down a bit (unlike the modern theatrical shorts, these cartoons ARE aimed at children), but bad ol’ Tom detached gets pounded with regularity.

We adults who peaceful luxuriate in cartoons are fortunate that so many Golden Age shorts are now available. But if you’re itching to try something original that honors the cartoons you grew up with, give this one a try. I know I’ll be buying the rest of the volumes in this series. No, they’ll never replace the Tom & Jerry of the Well-behaved Ol’ Days. . .but these well-made cartoons are the closest we’ll ever advance to seeing animation like that again.

My review is from only seeing the first cartoon Ho Ho Horrors. I haven’t played the fleshy disc yet and will soon as I really savor T&J. For somebody that grew up with the modern version this is a bit different from what I expected but aloof suitable. All the fun is unruffled there although it seems they took the level-headed violence out and made the cartoons more PC for young kids of today. For example in the first cartoon they brought succor Mammy Two Shoes as a white woman (instead of dusky) & call her Mrs Two Shoes. That was a bit of a shock but understandable for todays generation. I’ll agree with the other reviwers that young kids (and older cartoon loving folks like me) will like this current version of T&J. It’s suited…

Finally we come by to witness Esther Williams flicks in comely colors and updated sound! Not that the DVD transfers are perfect, Criterion-league: there are specks and scratches from time to time, and blacks tend to bleed, particularly in the early ones (e.g. Bathing Beauty) . But what a pleasure it is to have this happy entertainement serve, effect together with care and intelligence. There’s bonus material galore, though not all of it dealing with the star.

Included in the Bathing Beauty disc is a big interview Ms. Williams did with Robert Osborne for Turner Classic Movies. Ms. Williams comes across as somebody who has always been level headed, with a realistic opinion of life, aware of alternatives and skeptical of show-biz, always marveled at her profitable fortune (wondering when it would ruin), with the self-assurance gained from awareness of her personal worth. Nothing delusional there: underneath the Hollywood glamour, throughout her career and beyond, she has retained the mindset and integrity of a committed, champion athlete, i.e., it’s the hard work, constancy and achievement that count, not the glitz or the noise (she was slated to participate in the 1940 Olympics had WWII not interfered) . All these personal qualities arrive across in her films, and probably made her a star, current in her genre. Before, during and after, there was no other. Though she was a heavenly craftsman and learned her trade well as an actress, she really only played one character, Esther Williams. Audiences flocked to “Esther Williams movies,” with all fantasy such would entail (of course, production values count) . It is difficult not to feel that she’d be a grand friend to have. During the interview Robert Osborne can barely absorb his delight.

For fans, I would also recommend reading her down-to-earth autobiography.

Seriously…when I reflect of actors / actresses who are L-O-N-G overdue for the DVD treatment, Esther Williams is at the top of the list. Kudos to TCM for putting 5 of Ms. Williams’ unbelievable films…including my all-time common “On An Island With You”…in an affordable box spot. I’m clear Volume 2 will be greeted with equal enthusiasm by her fans and I know I’ll pre-order it the limited it’s available.

So what’s the substantial deal? Aside from the legendary aquatics and the intricately choreographed numbers, the films of Esther Williams are key examples of “They Don’t Acquire Movies Like That Anymore” movies. They don’t, and they can’t, because the world is really a different area. The simplicity and innocence and sweetness are qualities that exist in a readically different perform in 2007.

If your understanding of cinematic romance is Tom Glide telling Renée Zellweger that she “completes” him, or Renée telling Tom that he “had her at hello,” these might not be the just films for you. They’re more geniune, more unbiased, and warmer. They narrate the absolute best that MGM had to offer.

While “On An Island With You” may not be Ms. Williams’ signature film, it has all of the elements that made her films stout. Ricardo Montalban, dressed in burly navy uniform, strumming a guitar under a tropical tree and crooning the opening theme as Esther swims in a shady lagoon? Genius! The four-way, star-crossed lovers subplot featuring Williams, Montalban, Peter Lawford and Cyd Charisse? The Montalban / Charisse dance number? Jimmy Durante and Xavier Cugat? What’s NOT to like in this movie?

The other four films are objective as capable, but “Island” is a personal common.

I kept in mind what other reviewers said as well. The animation reminds me of PBS. It’s obviously been released on VHS as instructions for pressing play, cessation, etc. on a VCR are given. The animation is also not computer generated so some children may be build off about it. It reminds me of some of the PBS exciting reading programs. At least you don’t have to trouble about out-dated fashions. It’s fair a cat in simple clothing.

I am also a certified foreign language teacher Pre-K-12 and I am aware of what is out there for young children. I judge this is a gracious supplementary/support-type product, but I wouldn’t rely on it alone to assure your child French.

Of the products I viewed, I bear this one is the best for the younger children. I’m not obvious about the upper age range for the product, but I reflect you could employ it with a child younger than 4. I don’t assume you’d want to go lower than 2, especially with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations about viewing for under age 2.

In the segment that we viewed, we were introduced in English to the cat, Moustache and his parents. Most of the dialogue was in English so I’m not obvious how well this would work with a child who had a different essential language. Each phrase was said 3 times with the sentence presented on the cloak with it.

I don’t peep any young child (2-6) sitting through the entire DVD without adult interaction. As a teacher, I said the phrases with my daughter and even added some gestures, so I will admit all her attention was not on the DVD. I reflect 5-10 minutes is the max you could inquire. Not a babysitting DVD.

I’m looking for another program that has more action and play activities. For preschoolers who want to learn Spanish, I aloof fancy Boca Beth, but there doesn’t seem to be the French equivalent. I own Hop, Skip, and Jump in French would be a proper alternative, but it’s only currently available on CD format. I wasn’t thrilled with Beth Manners’ French series. They are repetitive and probably only one of them would suffice. There are some French Canadian children’s DVDs, but I don’t capture the names of them. Perhaps Amazon Canada has them.

My 2 year veteran loves his video. The animations are unique but they are pudgy of flare, color and imagination. The songs they include are by far the best piece and my daughter can’t glean enough of them. The main character Moustache, and the rest of the characters, are all well imagined and fun. As far as the learning experience my daughter loves to uncover the phrases and articulate the songs and I gaze her using what she has learned all the time, and the semi-interactive format they expend really gets her fervent in the epic line. I personally care for this video and would recommend it.

The episode quality is really pleasant. She-Ra is a demonstrate that appealed to both boys and girls. Although She-Ra was a female heroine, many of the shows episodes featured strong storylines by supporting characters. One character who enjoyed a lot of mask time was Bo. In the episode, “The Red Knight,” Bo feels his manhood was challenged when the mysterious Red Knight beats him in a series of physical events. Feeling down, Bo leaves home and sets out for the Whispering Woods along. In another episode, two young boys deliver Bo that their father’s axe was stolen, when actually they lost it. Bo goes off to retrieve the axe and finds grief. She-Ra rescues him.

She-Ra has many friends including Castaspella, Madame Razz, Glimmer, and Cowell. Light Hope and Madame Razz are among the few who know fragment the secret that Adora is She-Ra.

Similar to the He-Man series, there is a true or lesson at the slay of the episode which is explained for viewers. She-Ra is an delectable series, and it’s helpful to search for the prove on DVD after waiting for so long.

This is a gigantic box area loaded with extras of one of the greatest enchanting shows of the 1980′s. Even though I probably saw most if not all of these episodes 21 years ago, I don’t seem to remember any of them. Watching them now is composed highly delicious, even at 34 years dilapidated. I guess I’m mild a titanic kid at heart.

One thing I have noticed when watching the episodes is how remarkable Catra seems to annoy me. I could really do without all of her catlike sounds while talking! When she’s a person, she should sound more like a person and not how a cat might sound if it could muster up some words from the English language. Oh well, like it really matters. I honest had to acquire that off my chest.

I’m determined you can have faith that Entertainment Rights will secure the remainder of this series out on DVD as expeditiously and with the same quality as they did the He-Man series. Unlike other publishers, they will not leave you hanging. If you’re looking for some enormous entertainment from yesteryear, you can’t miss with this dwelling. For the Honor of Grayskull!

I was born in 1971. So when Hanna Barbera’s “Godzilla” cartoon came out in the slack 1970s, I was the perfect age for its intended audience.

This reveal featured the Calico, a research ship that traveled all over the world. The Calico carried all sorts of scientific research equipment with it, as well as a minicopter, a minisub, a bathosphere, a hovercraft, and a lifeboat. The Calico’s crew consisted of Captain Carl Majors, Dr. Quinn Darian (a research scientist), Brock (Dr. Darian’s assistant), Pete (Dr. Darian’s nephew), and Godzooky. Godzooky was apparently a younger relative of Godzilla. He was also Pete’s pet.

Although no episode of the explain ever mentioned how the crew of the Calico became friends with Godzooky and Godzilla, it was mentioned in a press release when the prove first aired: Godzooky was trapped in a coral reef, and he was rescued by the Calico’s crew.

As the crew of the Calico traveled all over the world, they would encounter various monsters, creatures, abominable guys, villains, enemies, etc. When they got in anguish, they could summon Godzilla by pressing a button on a little handheld signaler, which would emit a sonic frequency. Godzilla would then appear and set aside the day. When the signaler was unavailable, or broken, or when the sonic frequency was blocked, they could also call Godzilla by having Godzooky roar. Since Godzilla was a marvelous guy, he would always do whatever he could to aid them.

This prove had lots of action, adventure, and heroism. In the 26 episodes of this series, there were monsters, dragons, dinosaurs, giant insects, volcanoes, time fade, aliens, spaceships, meteors, asteroids, missiles, tanks, and numerous references to classic science fiction and old mythology. The explain had everything that a boy my age could ever ask for in a TV exhibit. It was my celebrated reveal at the time.

The Eartheater – San Francisco is being worried by a giant creature that lives underground and eats dirt. Buildings are collapsing all over the region. The entire city and its inhabitants are threatened. This is a very suited early episode. Of the 4 episodes on this DVD, this one is my current.

Attack Of The Stone Creatures – A pair of giant veteran stone creatures have advance to life in Egypt. Their breath creates blizzards in the middle of the desert. This is a comely pleasurable episode.

The Megavolt Monster – While doing scientific research in the bathosphere, Dr. Darian and Brock become trapped by several giant creatures that live in a giant air bubble at the bottom of the ocean. Godzilla carries Captain Majors and Pete down there to wait on rescue them inside his hand, which Captain Majors says is “air tight and pressure proof.” This is another grand episode.

This series is really one of Hanna-Barbera’s best shows as the animation, writing and yell work is far splendid to the other “cookie-cutter” produced shows the studio was churning out at the time. (Yogi’s State Urge anyone? ) It was originally presented under the title “THE GODZILLA POWER HOUR” (Not “The Godzilla Demonstrate”) and was paired with a respectable adventure explain called “Jana of the Jungle” (sadly not presented here) about a Sheena type jungle-woman looking for her lost father. Ratings for this second half of the “power hour” were terrible as kids tuned out after the Godzilla segment ended. So Jana was dropped after only three months and replaced with two older, already tested HB shows and the title was changed to “GODZILLA Shapely 90″.

Like many a movie series, once the box office has dried up, the next step is television. (That’s correct kiddies!! In ye olden days they archaic to turn successful movies into crappy TV shows. Not the other device around like it is now.) Shaft, Planet of the Apes, Topper, The Thin Man…. The list goes on. Godzilla was no exception. The movie series had ended in Japan in 1975 but in America he was having a revival. Godzilla vs. Megalon had been widely ditributed to theatres in summer of 1976 by Cinema Shares, a obscene rent distribution company best known for handly Kung Fu movies, and been a smashing success. It was the first Godzilla film in the US since Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster in 1971. It was shown on NBC in a prime time slot the following year, hosted by John Belushi in a Godzilla suit and was a ratings grabber. 77-78 saw the release of Godzilla on Monster Island, Godzilla vs the Cosmic Monster and Horror of Godzilla to weekend matinee’s. A Godzilla funny book from Marvel had started in 1977. Mattel, and some other companies also, released Godzilla toys such as the giant sized SHOGUN WARRIORS Godzilla and Rodan toys, “Godzilla’s Gang” area of vinyl monster dolls, a UFO smashing “Godzilla Game” and a hugely accepted bendie doll sold at Toys R Us stores. Wonderland Records released an equally accepted Godzilla represent featuring two intriguing, and modern, audio adventures. Viewmaster reels ware available featuring a Marvel comics adventure in 3-D. Adding to Godzilla’s career boon was the fact that eleven Godzilla movies were in beautiful heavy rotation on television. (Corporate free, infomercial free UHF, those were the days.)

With all this popularity, and no more Godzilla movies available for release in America, the time was obviously good for a Godzilla cartoon.

At this time, the US rites to the Godzilla character were owned by Henry Saperstein of United Productions of America company. The creators of Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoingboing. Saperstein had released Godzilla vs. the Thing and Godzilla’s Revenge in North America through American International Pictures, held the television rites to Godzilla’s latest and final film, Fear of Mechagodzilla, and had even bankrolled Monster Zero with Toho In Japan. Saperstein licensed the character to

Hanna-Barbera and the intelligent series was born.

Many Godzilla purists abhor the HB GODZILLA series, but I consider it is blooming correct to the character as he was being depicted by Toho at the time (Deem Godzilla vs. Megalon), and was therefor a comely logical progression. Some object to Godzillas physical appearance. It is obviously based on the famousAurora model kit, itself based on stills from King Kong vs. Godzilla.I happen to reflect that, given the limits of television produced animation at the time, its a farly faithful manufacture.

why the animators probably didn’t consume it. I’m guessing they honest didn’t reflect about it. They weren’t intentionally trying to disregard the original

He can sail and turn himself into a magnet. He can breath at the bottom of the ocean and on an alien planet. Godzilla is my hero and he can do anything. Even shoot lasers from his eyes.

As for the present itself. I mediate the plots are “Moral On”, Man.

Some of the storys, most in fact, are simular to the Toho films. One episode in particular was very grand like Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster.

There are many “island adventure” episodes like ‘Sea Monster or Son of Godzilla. Some feature “venerable evils”, such as giant monsters, returning after thousands of years of exile. Very noteworthy like some of Tohos monsters such as Megalon. There are alien invasion storys Honest as in Raze All Monsters or Monster Zero. There is a giant robot episode even, and many of the monster designes survey like they could have jumped factual out of a Japanese film. The Forgotten Islands “Cyclops”, Megavolt, Watchuka and Moonlode approach to mind. Heck, there is even a giant turtle!!!

The indicate is basically a aesthetic handsome continuation of where the films left

off. No its not Toho, But its not Tri-Star either. So, be thankfull Godzilla fans.

On thing to peek for on the DVD. The standard opening credits sequence

has been replaced on all the episodes by an alternate one that originally aired only at the beginning of the episode “The TIme Dragons”(believed to be the first episode produced) It is basically the same as the standard opening but at the extinguish features a title card crediting Henry Saperstein and Toho pictures. This is entirely understandable really. No stout deal
